I really want to try this overclocking business

some_random_panda wrote:

Anyone know of a program I can use to monitor my cpu temp?  I'm hesitant to up the core voltage/fsb because I'm new to this and I don't have a system fan.
I have a jumper for sys fan and was wondering, if you DO hook up a fan to that jumper, where does the fan usually go? ATM all I have is a stock CPU fan, and two case fans. Where does one put a system fan?

How does one update BIOS? I assume go to the mfg website and download a newer version of BIOS for the board type? Then...Hopefully it'll include install directions.

I wanna give this a try, but only have a stock CPU heatsink and fan. Can I tinker around just a little bit without problems? Or should I buy an aftermarket cooling system immediately before I even start?

To update the BIOS you need to first make sure you don't already have the latest (CPUz will tell you) and if not, download the latest version along with their flash utility. You put the files onto a floppy (or a USB stick, if your motherboard supports that) and then boot into the flash menu (most motherboards do it differently, but it's generally similar).

Or you can use a Windows updater. Most motherboards have a utility to update the BIOS from Windows.

Due to my laziness and lack of will to install a floppy drive, I usually update my BIOS from Windows. People say not to because it can cause problems, but meh, it's always worked just fine for me.

You'll be fine with the cooler you've got, so long as you don't want 30%+ increase.

D: Why did this get un-stickied?
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Ok, CPUz says this about my BIOS:

Brand: Award Software International
Version: F11
Date: 1/13/2006

So, is that the latest?

Also, my CPU is at 2.2Ghz, and the temp according to coretemp is 44c right now.

I read that RealTemp is designed for Intel CPU's and has the temp settings set up according to tests done on them, so should I NOT use realtemp for my AMD because of this fact?

OH YA AND THIS:

I was thinkin of using this FurMark for my GPU (ATI Radeon X1800 GTO) but I don't have a program that monitors GPU temp. Which is a good one again? 3DMark?

Edit oh wait, FurMark monitors GPU temp already... neeeevermind

Rivatuner is the one to monitor and overclock your GPU, but use Furmark as a stress test/benchmark.

I'd say on stock cooling you should get ~2.8. Maybe higher if you risk it some. Bear in mind AMDs run hotter than Intels.

You should be fine, because if you do it too much, it'll not boot into Windows. In that case, pop the battery out of your mobo and start again.

Also get Orthos to stress test your CPU, and if you get one error, even one, lower your OC.

Just be careful, do things by the book, never do something you don't understand, and you'll be fine. The dangers of Overclocking are Overhyped. (c wat i did thar?).

I dunno man:

RivaTuner is a complete powerful tweaking environment, providing you everything you may need to tune NVIDIA GPU based display adapters.
Guru3d states its for NVIDIA GPU's. I got an ATI card, so....?

I guess this helps:

RivaTuner also provides limited support for display adapters based upon ATI RADEON 8500 and newer ATI graphics processors. All RivaTuner's features besides driver-level tuning options are also available on supported ATI hardware.
X1800 is one supported I hope.

I'll maybe start trying to OC my CPU later tonight, I got stuff to do today, I just wanted to get the needed programs and info in preperation

I've got a HD4670 and it worked perfectly, no problems. Monitored temps nicely too.

Rivatuner supports pretty much every card, don't worry.

Also, about the BIOS updating. Keep in mind that updating the BIOS does nothing for you if you have no problems as is, or if there is a very specific feature in a new version that you just can't live without. Updating the BIOS has the potential to turn your motherboard into a paper weight if it doesn't update properly.

And about the version, I can't tell you if you have the latest just by that info...check on your manufacturers website and see if the latest version is the one you have, or if there is something newer.

with bootable USB stick its almost idiot proof to do BIOS update if you use proper flash tool that verifies the flash after it. And newer BIOS often helps overclocking. Sometimes really much.

Flashing BIOS from Windows,.... I really don't recommend that as Asus for example has huge warnings NOT TO DO THAT as I have seen countless dead motherboards suffering from unfixably corrupted BIOSes. Often these are result of flashing BIOS from Windows.

Ok, I'll worry about the BIOS later, I'm tooling around with Rivatuner and following THIS part of the guide on Guru3d and have ran into a snag.

I'm setting up the GPU fan speed setting for the GPU core temp

Address this photo:
https://img440.imageshack.us/img440/6184/rivatunerimagezz3.jpg

The steps say to click on the green plus sign highlighted by the red box. Only problem is...I DONT have a green plus sign there? So...Can't really configure the rest of the profile for GPU fan speed and core temps...

haaaalp?

No dude, I got my fan speeds configured. I'm on the next step of setting up my fan speed settings to core temperatures. I'm running RivaTuner 2.22 I think, and that tutorial says Rivatuner 2.0. So, this may be why I'm not seeing some of those options pictured.

you don't need to muck around with your fan speeds. Just crank up the clocks and be done with it
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

Speaking of which, I went from stock core clock of 495 Mhz to 573 Mhz. I tried it all the way up to 600 and it crashed on me and the card reset back to stock settings

I have it back at my profile setting of 573 atm. I'm running my GPU fan at a fixed 80% load and my temp is 46c. I'm gonna go play BF2 now

Nonononono, what to do is

1) Furmark. Write down score.
2) Overclock.
3) Furmark, compare score.
4) Overclock
5) Furmark, compare score.
...and so on until you crash
6) Put overclock down a few mhz from crash
7) Furmark, compare score.
8) Play BF2.

It doesn't have to crash to be unstable. If you see artifacts and such, that means you have gone too far.

It's been a long time since I saw real artifacts. Damn these new drivers resetting before anything funky happens

installing furmark now, I played two rounds of bf2 and no artifacts. I DID notice that its not as choppy as it was before when I flew the Hind on Surge.

ANYWAY, this is a thread about CPU overclocking if i dont remember correctly

So, I haven't tried CPU overclocking yet but will eventually when I'm done playing with Riva and Furmark

Is this what you are referring to when you say artifacts?

Those green spots weren't there on stock settings, but appeared at 580Mhz Clock and 576Mhz Memory

Stock setting is 495...

Artifacts are graphical anomalies (things that shouldn't be there), so those green things are artifacts. Lower core clock speed by 10mhz increments, until they disappear.
