Car manufacturer Nissan has announced it is to axe about a quarter of the workforce at its Sunderland plant

https://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k5/Murta44/Pics/Nissan.jpg

The plant, which is the most productive in Europe, employs a huge amount of people from the town where I live.  There's going to be a lot of unhappy people around soon, and I know a good portion of them. Despite the job losses, I think the pub which I work in might be filling up in the coming weeks - for all the wrong reasons.

If the most productive plant in Europe is to axe so many jobs, I dread to think what will happen to the less efficient plants.  It seems the worst of the economic downturn is still to come

Maybe that's the problem, it was too good. Too many cars being made, not enough being sold. Needed to cut back. But I'm sure alot of them must've seen it coming, the car industry hasn't exactly been the most safe thing for the past year or so, hopefully some of them have been just looking and finding things in the mean time. Makes you wonder, what if these people can't find other jobs. Maybe shit will start to look like the 20-30's soon.... although apparently this country went through quite bad things back in the 70's. Wasn't alive to see it, but I've heard and read it was pretty bad

This is the thing.  The workforce is a highly skilled and specialised one, but the way the automotive market is, there's no way they'll be walking into jobs down the road at Rolls Royce.  Essentially they're fucked.  They will have to resort to pulling pints with me, and for people with kids and mortgages that just aint good enough.

A Vulcan and a Canberra for sure..think the Vampire is much smaller than the ones we see there.

Correct, however having access to state of the art satellite intel I am able to provide further analysis.
The Vampire could in fact be seen in the original pic, just testing you, you failed.

Like Cam said January will be employment holocaust, 2009 will be a touch year for many employees at many plants across the US and in Europe, Asia will follow a little later in 2009 ...

So how are things for everyone else? Or your area/friends/family etc..

Most of my family are in private owned businesses, and whilst things are slowing down a tad, there's still business going on. Mum's in the public sector (school office) so that one should be pretty safe.

I know a few people who are having to take pay cuts from their jobs. But so far, it seems......ok. Getting worried though, things are seeming to get quite bad.

Ah yes. I see it now.

I blame a poorly laid-out museum.

Makes me think, Browns descision not to call an election may very well have been his biggest mistake.  If he had lost, it be cameron dealing with this and as a result labour could swoop in when its over and probably guarntee another 10years without the torries.

Election may happen in the autumn, I doubt he wants to leave it till the last possible moment, as we have seen, anything can happen out of the blue these days.

Why anyone would want to be a PM/President right now is beyond me tho :\

I honestly don't know anyone who's having problems keeping their job. Honestly, the job situation for people I know was worse back in the late nineties than it is right now. Probably a function of being older and more established and thus less likely to be laid off than new hires.

I know a whole bunch of people likely to lose their jobs, five got fired last month, whole departments are closing, soon everyone is going to have to re-apply for their own job.

Nice way of cleaning house if you ask a manager.

Yes, very effective, and thats why they're doing it.
'I'm sorry, you don't meet the requirements for the job you've been doing perfectly well for the last ten years, goodbye.'
Not sure its legal but probably is as the company is changing sites, and in the process quietly moving most of the manufacturing and design work to China.
