Thoughts? While I do think it's a bit strange forcing people to go digital, the airwaves do need to be freed up and ultimately it's for the greater good. I think I first heard about the switch two years ago... people have had two fucking years to save up money to buy a converter box and yet apparently 5 million still haven't? Tough shit for them, they can stay TV-less until they get a box.

I am also pretty sure the Government is giving vouchers for the boxes. My next door neighbor go on for like $10 bucks outta pocket.

Preparations for the switch to digital television have been rocky, causing lawmakers and consumer advocates to seriously worry that television watchers, particularlylow-income, rural and elderly Americans who rely most heavily on over-the-air signals, will lose access to their main source of news and entertainment.

Huh? It doesn't, do you even know what the digital switch-over is, or anything about it.

This is for the UK but it still should be pretty relevant

@ColCarnage they need to get with the damn times

@SgtHeihn according to the article, there's no more money in the fund for the coupons lulz.

@Pug something like that yeah

@Wreck, analog signals take up more airspace as it were than digital signals. With the removal of analog signals, there will be lots of free airspace opened up for things like, oh I don't know, nationwide wireless broadband.

The commercials have been running non-stop since they passed the law, and it's only been getting worse. If have to see another commercial after Feb. 17th I'm gonna bust a nut. Americans need to stop procrastinating and get off their asses. If we can't even bother to buy what is probably considered a necessity now, what makes us think we can fix the economy?

One of the only things I'm worried about Obama in general is him looking for the "100%" solution.  This is like what, 98%...not good enough?

Of course, this is better than the 10% solution, no doubt...

Agreed. The only possible argument against the switch would be "What about receiving emergency information?!." And that's bunk anyway, because the designated conduits for emergency info (that is, the stations who get info from the Emergency Alert System) will keep their analog broadcasts only to display emergency info and info about the DTV transition.

You can get coupons for the TV Converter Box from https://www.dtv2009.gov/

I already received mines. Unfortunately I still use bunny ears(for one of the TVs in my house). Although the only time I use the TV is to watch shows from my brothers' Ipod on the TV.

Some people won't have broadcast TV...what a fucking crisis.

They might be forced to (gasp) read a book or something.

It doesn't make a difference to me we have a satellite dish, and hell, if tv is really that important to you, get basic cable, its like $20 a month.

I think Obama has much bigger things to worry about.

I do find it odd that he's commenting on this but hasn't said shit about the Gaza Strip situation.

Or just make a once-in-a-lifetime payment of $40 to get the god damn converter boxes that have been advertised for a year on OTA broadcasts (and now they're putting yellow banners in shows telling you to get the converters, as well as commercials after every show telling you to). There's no fucking excuse for people to not have a converter box by now. If we don't force the upgrade now, then there will always be stragglers and always somebody who wants to delay this.

We were supposed to switch in 2006 but it got delayed. It's been three damn years since we were originally supposed to go digital... plenty of time for even a minimum wage worker to save up $40.

Obama's supposed to be the 'tech' president, but so far that's proving pretty weak. And yes, it is funny that he seems more concerned with a few rednecks living in the sticks than the Middle East situation.

You going to provide the $40 to people that are in debt and spend every penny on living and the rest goes is taken out of their bank?

No?

Then tell people to buy something just because it's "cheap".

If you're that poorly off with your financial situation, watching TV shouldn't be a priority. Since when was the government supposed to hold everybody's hand?

But if you insist on running things as a welfare state, I'd have no problem with the government continuing the coupon program for another year or so (a colossal waste of money but it'll placate those people who also think murderers and rapists should roam freely in society). But just bring the fucking transition already.
