This has probably been stated before (in multiple posts), but I think it's important to create one full and comprehensive post that sums up what the User Interface for Battlefield 2 should contain.

EA and Dice could really learn something by observing competition's User Interfaces.  Take Valve's Counter-Strike: Source, for example.  You have a set of links on the left hand side that open seperate windows for each action.  The windows can be resized and multiple windows can be open at the same time.  The fact that BF2 uses one large maximized window makes it difficult to navigate around.

Here are a list of improvements (in no particular order) that I think should be implemented:

1.   Resizable option windows (options, server list, stats, etc)

2.   Multiple windows can be open at the same time

3.   When comparing stats with another player, multiple stats windows should be able to be placed next to each other.

4.   Server browser:  The Server Browser should be more comprehensive.  It should tell you which round (if each map is played 3 times, for example) the server is on for a particular map.  If I want to play Gulf of Oman on a server that plays that map 3 times, I don't want to take the time to load the map and join the server only to get to play the tail end of the 3rd round.  There needs to be a couple different options for full favorite servers.  One option would be to notify me when a space is open on the server.  The second would be to automatically join as soon as a space is available.  During my wait, I should be allowed to play on a different server.  If a spot is opened on my desired destination while playing, I should exit the current server and join the newly opened spot.  This is something that CS:S has in their server browser and is much more reliable than clicking "Join Server" over and over again in hopes of getting in.

5.   If I select a server in the Server Browser, the User Interface sometimes becomes so laggy that I cannot even select another one without first exiting the game.

6.   I recently deleted the movie files that play behind the User Interface.  It should be an option of whether or not you want those to play in the background.  They only slow things down.

7.   When EA has special notifications for me, it shouldn't require me to exit the game to view their message.

8.   Buddy List.  Sure, some people choose X-Fire, but I choose not to install extra bloatware on my machine to see if others are online and playing.  When in-game, I should be able to select a player from the list and add them to my buddies list.

9.   This is not necessarily UI related... but why in the world doesn't EA have an easy way for me to run the game in widescreen mode?  Isn't that becoming the new standard for displays?

10.  Copy and Paste should be allowed from Windows to BF2 (like for adding a server to your favorites).  Why this isn't in there, God only knows.

11.  Let me be able to see a server browser from outside of the game.  Valve has this in the form of Steam.  All of the same server options that are available in-game are available on the Windows desktop.

12.  Better filters would be nice.  For example, if I only want to play Gulf of Oman on a ranked server with 64 players that's not full and is populated and is not on its last round and has a ping less than 150, I should be able to find it quickly.

There's probably more ideas that people have out there, please feel free to share them.  I plan on forwarding this to EA when the list is more complete.

This is a great Idea but we need voip along with that so that you can chat with your clan while looking for a server. We use Teamspeak now and it works fine (we have lots of extra computers and bandwith). But it would be great not to have to run another application.

My Additions to the game
No order

. Autobalance only those people that are not is a squad.

. Commander has the ability to squad people up.

. Force Fead back support for Joystick only. no wheel support

X-Fire is all you need. 2MB, can chat during almost any modern game without Alt+Tabbing out, voice chat, works for more games than just BF2, game-playing statistics, server info, one-click join, favorite and recently visited server lists for all your installed games, launch your game via X-Fire, a download system that can automatically download X-Fire updates and updates for any games you have installed... I guarantee you, it's not "bloatware".

Because it's not in any other FPS games either.

i've tried Xfire before, but it just seemed like yet another pointless piece of software that i didn't want installed on my machine.  i run a pretty tight ship here.  i only install what i need or absolutely want.  maybe it was the version of Xfire i tried- was like 2 years ago.

That would be really nice.  Force people into squads would make being a commander really, really, nice.

I know this may be a bit hard to do nad im better off creating a WHOLE new acount but wouldnt it be nice if we could change our actual names. For example: say someone is in a clan "[XX]Namegoeshere" what if someone left that clan and joined up a new clan. Im sure they would rather change that actual name by taking tags off and replacing them with new ones without having to make a new account..

CS/Steam allows this to happen and you can actually change it ingame.

Personally I would like to see something done about this rather than some stupid prefix thing.

the truth of the matter is that it's not that difficult to do.  reason being that they use your user id (which is a number) as your unique identifier.  but on top of that, they use your online nickname (e.g. [q3w]The_Soup_Nazi) as a unique identifier, as well.  why they need two identifiers tied to the same account is beyond me.  if BF2 was a database, their DBA would be fired for doing something that dumb.

I can see requiring both to be unique, but only if you could change your name (if the name is unique, and doesn't change... what's the point of the PID).  But, given the PID being the record's primary key, you may still want unique player names, for a couple of reasons...

a) you don't want two players with the same name to end up on the same server... messages get confusing.  "Bob killed Dude with an F-15"....    Um... Bob is standing next to me... and so are two Dude's.

b) multiple identical user names, even if the players are never present on the same server can cause identity problems.  The name is a better handle as far as our human memories go...  so I see a wanker named "Bob" in-game, and go back later to ban him from my server, it's pretty difficult when there are 500 players named "Bob".  Or looking up stats, adding to reserved lists, etc.

Of course, you want it to be unique and indexed... but you don't want anything to use that in place of the primary key.  My guess as to why you can't change your name... they realized that they screwed up several places, and store a user name in several places instead of a PID, and allowing name changes would mean anywhere the name was stored wouldn't pull your record properly if your name was changed.

Just my best guess.
