Someone explain to me about ram timing

i bought 2 sticks of corsair XMS 1gb ram and it says timing of 2-3-3-6 (2.5-3-3-6 for AMD). what are these numbers, and how do you enter them in the bios or see what the ram is accually running at? i am wanting to over cloak the ram some... how do i do this and what is a safe amount?

AMD dual core 4200+
Asus A8N32SLI
BFG 7800 GT OC
Corsair XMS ram 2gb total
550 watt Power supply
water cooled

dont know if this helps, in a rush to finish some work so i just searched for RAM timing on yahoo.

U can use CPU-Z to see what ur ram is running at.

Try http://www.corsairmicro.com/main/trg-cas.html instead for a quicker explaination.

The first number (w) in the w-x-y-z latency is your cas.

Currently, for Corsair, you can get down to 2-2-2-5 in 512MB sticks, and 2-3-2-6 in 1GB sticks. The lower, the better.

Frequency - 200mhz
CAS# latency - 3.0
RAS# to CAS# - 3
RAS# Pre-charge - 3
Tras# - 8

what do i do to get these down? where do i change them?

Not a good idea to bump posts. Forum rules stated that and the mods won't be happy to see ya doin' that.

If the boot/POST screen says that and the timings are not what it's advertised, then you have to enter those numbers in manually. Go into the BIOS and change them there. Your motherboard manual should have something documented as to where this is located.

Once you make the changes, save and reboot. The POST screen ought to have your RAM timings matched with the timings printed on the memory module or box.

You can try timing them more aggressively from BIOS (if the options are available), but you're not going to squeeze very much out of it. Or, if they're timed wrong as sixshot says (timing will be on the RAM itself; if not, check the mfg for default model timing and voltage), you can correct them in the same manner.

considering i couldnt even play on what i had, and i didnt have to pay for this i would like it if you wouldnt call it junk. i dont want the latest and greatest and this computer runs like a dream for me. no problems at all. idc that in 6 months something else is coming out because that will always happen. so i get to enjoy this now and play BF2 with great graphics and no lag. so thanks for your imput but i dont want to not play for a few months to wait on something that i wont be able to afford for a long time. so in a year when this stuff is tested and the bugs are out i will go buy one. i tend to do that anyways. im working on saving for my Z06 so i dont want to spend it later on more than i need
