I've never really liked the guy myself. Considering how he presents opinions and beliefs that he doesn't agree with himself on 'Bullshit!', tolerance and respect isn't something he really represents to me, either.
As for the talk about preaching, I could follow that if we didn't live in a world where everybody who want to care about religion already know where they stand, but we do, and everyone knows this. Preaching to people who've already decided against what you have to say is not a kind act, or a showing of friendly nature. It's obnoxious. Nothing else.

It sounds like he came to the realization that " the white hat club " as I call them, aren't offering anything negative. Religion may have caused a lot of problems in the world, but it also gives some people a reason to be good to each other.
Atheists that say they know this or that about the afterlife are as ignorant as Muslims thinking they will get 72 virgins for killing themselves. Agnositics and atheist often feel jealousy towards those with faith. Speaking for myself anyway.

Says the guy who got hit by the truck..lol. You missed his point. If you truly believe it how can you not at least make a respectful attempt?mikkel wrote:

It's actually inline with Penn's other thoughts. Nobody has the right not to be offended, make your point.

I didn't miss the point at all. It's pretty apparent from my post. Going with his analogy, everyone already -knows- that he believes that they'll be hit by a truck, and the people who don't share his opinions aren't going to be swayed by him or the millions of other people like him regurgitating it. Thinking that dozens of people haven't also made respectful attempts before him is naive. We live in a world of global communication that has made sure that EVERYONE knows what ANYONE believes. The days of going door to door are over.Kmarion wrote:

As an atheist, I acknowledge that I don't know anything more than anyone else about the afterlife or god. Still, I can't say I feel jealous of anyone's faith either.ATG wrote:

To me, having faith in religion is not something to be envied -- it's quite the opposite. Having faith actually makes you more gullible in most respects. It's a lack of faith and a strong sense of skepticism that protects you far better in this world than any faith.
The more you trust people or human institutions like religion, the more you will be taken advantage of and will be disappointed.
Or Christians thinking if they're good they will go to heaven and if they bad they'll go to hell.ATG wrote:

The point being, that none of us knows. And we all have 'faith'.
Yes, even sceptical agnostic atheists like me, have to have 'faith' in something - something upon which their whole belief system is built.
IMO, there is no one true 'way'.
I think the truck analogy is bad. We aren't talking life and death here we are talking about intangible hypothetical private 'stuff' - not oncoming trucks. While I will agree that the person was not inherently bad for imposing on him - he probably truly believed he was well meaning - I would have to politely ask the person to desist immediately and to not ever bother me with such suggestions/overtures. I find it, quite simply, rude and imposing.

Religion is bullshit but the new-fangled Atheist 'vanguard' are just as abortion-worthy. Fuck 'em.
Atheism has existed forever, I don't get why people debate things like this now. Modern day Americans / Brits seem to like creating controversy out of their 'Zomg controversial "new" belief' aka the atheist faith that Romanticist poets had hundreds of years ago. GG.

I think a lot of the controversy is the result of evangelicism. I don't know how it works in Britain, but here, we have a lot of people that are basically salesmen for God. They can be rather obnoxious in their proselytism.Uzique wrote:

Granted, in what appears to be a reaction to this, the atheists have their own proselytizers. These are the people who go out of their way to piss religious people off by protesting public displays of religion. These people embarass me equally as much as the evangelicals often embarass the moderate religious people.
As far as I can tell, it looks like Europe has more of a problem with a small group of Muslims that proselytize and try to protest everything. I guess they must be like Europe's version of evangelicals.

Actually, if the atheists are right, there is no way of knowing, because you'd just be dead.ATG wrote:

I'm not saying that I have turned into a jesus freak, but I am reviewing the evidence.
Funny that 99% percent of self proclaimed atheists I have spoken with haven't ever read the bible.
Kinds makes them ignorant on a foundational level.

Personally, I think most religious people are just doing it to fit in. Church becomes a social club where, since all your family is in, why not participate? As I know from personal experience, it is rather awkward when you first express to your Christian family that you think religion is bullshit. A lot of people don't want to deal with that social awkwardness, so they continue going to church regardless of whether they actually believe or not.
It's kind of like being gay. People say they believe, but I'd bet a good portion of them are actually closet atheists/agnostics. When you live in the Bible Belt like me, mentioning you're atheist is kind of like revealing that you're gay. So, I'm very careful in who I tell I'm atheist.
Still, I don't go so far as to go to church to fit in.
There are some people who truly do believe in their religion though. Some of them are crazy, but others actually are good people like the guy that Penn met.
i went to 12 years of catholic school. i have read all the bollocks. prolly way more than you.ATG wrote:

you dont need to read a book to not believe an invisible white man in the clouds.
You only need to read a few lines off some sort of religious text to just laugh, you don't exactly need to read the whole thing before you make a proper judgement. You know, like how if food tastes shit you're not going to eat the whole thing before you can say so. Or basically anything like that
Probably so. I have read a great deal of books about the history of modern religions, anthropology, archeology and Freemasonry.usmarine wrote:

To me, when the whole thing is viewed, it is bollocks, but...what's the alternative? And, as one that believes he has experienced the Supernatural how does one better explain life after death?
The alternative is a porn infested, scam and fraud ridden system, where most everybody is living on credit and scoff at the idea of God, while cursing each other casually and offering no good counter-ideology.
I find many aspects of Christianity annoying, the main thing being that they want you to accept the resurrection as a literal thing. That's the paart Masonry explains better.
There is also no believable accounts of the people Jesus was alleged to have raised from the dead. I mean, wouldn't they have written more about them? What happened to the 1/3 of angels that sided with Satan? Were they punished and sent down as colored people and the starving as wack job Mormons would have you believe?
As a whole though, there are no better alternative to a set of guidelines than the Ten Commandments for a way to run a city.
add hockey and beer and you have what i like. i am not living just so i can maybe, perhaps, live in some afterlife. no thank you. i will enjoy myself now with what i can actually see.ATG wrote:

You see, I believe religion is a very good way to control people. It works very well in that respect. The average person isn't too bright, and about the only way to get some people to act in an even remotely moral way is to literally put the fear of God in them.
So in that respect, I see religion as a necessary evil. I just think that more perceptive people tend to see that it's bullshit. They see the controlling nature of most religion and live life on their own terms.
In other cases, however, the perceptive people use the control that religion has to their benefit.
