No shoes were harmed in the filming of this incident, but the speaker may have been lucky to get out alive. As soon as he denounced Larijani as illegitimate, a cheer went up in the auditorium, but it quickly got drowned out as soon as the student directed his ire to Ahmadinejad. While the protester described the Iranian president as “nauseating”, some in the auditorium jumped to their feet and started chanting support slogans for Ahmadinejad including “Death to hypocrites!”

Note the reaction of the rest of the students in this video, taken at Shiraz University on December 5th. They don’t seem happy to find themselves in the middle of this near-riot, although Larijani himself seems unmoved by either the criticism or the response. The student gets shouted off the stage, and no one seems interested in defending him.

Which took more guts tossing shoes at President Bush in Iraq, or standing up to the mullahcracy in Iran?

that student will be dead in a month, the shoe thrower might spend 3 months in prison before being pardoned after Bush leaves office so that there is no controversy.

You decide.

Yet when people protest against Bush they are unpatriotic ne'r-do-wells (according to some people here).

The scariest thing about this is that Iran is actually one of the most Westernized countries in the Middle East.  You can imagine how much more disturbing the reactions are to dissent in other countries like Yemen.

I hope to Christ you're kidding. COINTELPRO was nowhere near what the Russians have done over the years. You're LAtimes story is about investigating suspected anarchist. None of which had any charges brought up against them. "This whole thing, is so absurd." I suggest you pause for a minute and actually take the time to read the Russian treason bill. No Government likes dissent, that is true. Then there is government that will through you in jail for twenty years and beat you down if they interpret any at all.

And your Yahoo news story is about proposed legislation.  I knew full well when I posted that what your response would be.  I'm simply pointing out that dissent is not taken lightly by any government - and action is taken, it's just varying degrees.  I don't need wiki to tell me about how evil a man Stalin was;  Solzhenitsyn told me all I needed in Gulag Archipelago.  But thanks anyway.

BTW, I can provide links of dissidents in the US getting beat down too.  Varying degrees.  Does that make my point any more relevant?

Don't take this as me condoning what the Russian government has done under Putin, because I think Russia is one of the worst-run States in the world - I just don't think we should look past what the US does either (and there is more than one instance of CoIntelPro-type programs being administered post-9/11, I just linked the one I recently read).

Well since you decided to delve into the past by linking me to a COINTEL wiki article, of course you should have known full well that I would have brought up Stalin. Your welcome .

It doesn't make your point any less relevant. I in fact acknowledged your point and also suggested that the degree varies.

I'm aware of what this administration has done as far as surveillance. I don't need some La times oped article to tell me how evil Bush is.
