My little brother (sirschmoopy) is arguin that if you have a combination lock with 3 sppols containing the numbers 0-9 then there are 999 combinations. Can anyone tell me how many there is if he is wrong?
im pretty sure he is right.
Nope, there are 729 possible combinations.

999? Wrong, and
729? Wrong.
It's 1,000. The combo: 0-0-0 counts, as well as 0-0-1 to 9-9-9, so that's 1,000.
Where the heck did a guess of 729 come from?!

once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.
Whoops, there are 10 possibilities. No wonder I failed that last math exam.sexecuti0ner wrote:

You have 9 possibilities for each digit and 3 digits, hence 9x9x9. The mathematical process used is a combination (oddly enough) which is similar to a permutation. Someone else must know what I'm talking about.

1000 different combinations from 000 to 999.
0-9 = 10 numbers.sexecuti0ner wrote:

000 is the default setting in most of the lock types in question. It is, however, a combination..Sup wrote:
You do know 3 zeros is not a lock combo? "000" is default for unlocking it.

No it's not..Sup wrote:

Um, you can still set it to 000.....Sup wrote:

Is 000 not a combination of 3 numbers? Just because it is usually used as the default doesn't make it any less of a lock code possibility.Sup wrote:

there is 1000. Numbers 0-9 mean 10 numbers on each spool. possible combinations are equal to the numbers on each spoole multiplied. in this case 10x10x10 which is 1000. There
I'll hijack this thread for a moment:
I've always wondered how many possible combinations are there in lottery where you pick combination of 7 numbers of maximum 39 number(1-39)

Wouldn't it be 39x38x37x36x35x34x33 since you have 1 less number to choose from each time?blah wrote:
