Because as a Western nation you are a target of Islamic extremists. If Canada just sat back and let everyone else do the hard work and benefited by it without contributing you'd look like a Cunt on the world stage.

I think the Afghanistan conflict is much more legitimate for the West's involvement than Iraq was.  The Taliban truly was a threat to the world.

We (the 'allied foreign forces' in Afghanistan) were there way before 9/11.

Now we have Karzai (US muppet, former UNOCAL muppet and Taliban sympathizer).  OBL hasn't been caught, Al Qaeda has not been dismantled (although most senior leadership has), and we effectively kicked the Taliban out of control (of Kabul).  Opium production is up (higher than it was under the Taliban), the US-backed government has little control outside Kabul, and coalition deaths are increasing.  Now we are increasing incursions into Pakistan.  Where does it end?  The stated objective is to stabilize the region, oust Al Qaeda and Taliban remnants and create a better standard of living for the Afghan people - and that is happening, little by little - through creation of infrastructure and government institutions.  But at what cost?  Numerous dead, Pakistan moving further away from US support, and billions of dollars.

Really, what is the point?

Its not like every Canadian soldier is over there!   To date there are roughly 2500 Canadian troops in Afghanistan, out of 60,000 active and 20,000 reservists.

Like Australia, we only make small contributions but it keeps us well trained, particularly working as a coalition.  This is important if the BIG Balloon goes up and we all have to band together again (i.e. World Wars).

There is also a political agenda that was agreed to after WWII.  Do a google on AUSCANZUKUS if you can be bothered.

Its police job to arrest gangstas, and army's job to "arrest" terorists, not the other way around.

Well Id rather see, martial law, than old ladies getting beat down for change. Yea its polices job alright, I'm just pissed that my taxes are  being spent on cleaning up another country, while my own is quite upside down. As far as morale goes, That's been low for many years now as law and punishment go down the shitter!
