Will Steam's in-game chat work if I load BF2 into "My Games"?

I've loaded it into Steam, launched it through Steam, but the chat won't appear when it press the shortcut key.  Is their a way to get this to work?

Got it working.

It has to be launched through Steam, else it won't work.  (even if steam is open)

Just by-the-by, don't you find that you press both Shift and Tab lots at the same time in BF2?

Exactly. Same thing with CoD4.

Also, does anyone know how to get both Vanilla and Special Forces on there? I haven't played around with it much, but for some reason only my Special Forces is showing up. (Not a big deal though, tbh, since I'm hardly on Steam anyway)
