The Fog of War: Eleven Lessons from the Life of Robert McNamara

Has anyone else watched this movie? For those of you interested in world politics and international relations, it's a must see movie. In case you didn't know, McNamara was Secretary of Defense under JFK and LBJ, during the Vietnam War and the near nuclear war during the so called 'Thirteen Days'. This movie is his reflection upon his time in office.

McNamara was an idiot.  So was Kennedy for making him Sec. of Defense with no prior experience.  I haven't seen the movie but I had to do numerous case studies on the Cuban Missile Crisis and I came to understand the failed groupthink during those 13 days.  I also recently read that the only thing that stopped a Soviet nuclear attack was a direct disobey of orders by a Soviet Nuclear Sub Captain.  Either way, I'll have to check it out.  Thanks!

The funny thing is...  neoconservatism cribs a lot of its hawkishness from the Kennedy era.  It's almost like the neocons decided to apply the mistakes of the JFK and LBJ era to the Middle East.

If Bush had stayed true to his original stance of "no nation building" in 2000, the world would probably be a much better place today.

McNamara wasn't an idiot, but he didn't realize that his theories needed to be adapted to the Defense Department. His drive for multiuse airplanes (such as the F-111 and original F-X designs) was a bit misguided, as an example.

No, he is/was an idiot - in regards to US foreign policy.  His ideas for multi-use planes has little to no relevance in this discussion.

You could have specified that. The example of the planes has the relevance of demonstrating another example of how McNamara was not the best Secretary of Defense. But w/e...
