When should I graduate?

I'd have posted this in Everything Else (Junk Drawer ) but I hardly ever post there, and would rather get the opinion of D&ST.

Okay, so I got my exam results a few hours ago, and I'm now eligible to graduate with a Bsc. in computer science.

I have two options regarding a graduation date - December or April. If I graduate in December, I can only do so in absentia as its too late to apply to take part in the ceremony - I get the bit of paper either from the registry or in the mail. If I graduate in April, I get the whole ceremony, gowns, caps, photos and all that shit.

I'd be happy to wait until April, except for a few reasons. At xmas last year my family got some bad news (see the suicide thread), and graduating before then would be a bit of good news at a time of the year when last years events will be on everyone's mind. Also, my grandma is 87 and has had a few health scares - while shes in good health now, theres no guarantee she'll make it to April, and she likely wouldn't be able to attend the ceremony anyway.

What do you recommend, D&ST?

December. Screw the ceremony it's just a waste of time/money/effort anyway. Especially with that last reason(s) you gave.

December. Once you get your degree you won't want to have to sit around until April just so you can "walk" (participate in the ceremony). I won't be graduating until Winter of 2010 and I told my parents this and told them that I really don't want to "walk" and I'd rather just have a party at home and not deal with all the bullshit of the graduation ceremony. However they said they wanted me to because seeing that ceremony is their payoff. So ask your parents and family, see what they think

December. Fuck the ceremonies...they've overglorified and worthless. I wish I didn't have to take part in mine, but luckily I basically AM graduating after this year (I'm a junior).

I'm quite sure that graduating with a BSc is slightly higher-quality than graduating from high-school.

I'm not even sure why you call it 'graduation' when you leave high-school anyway, the only skills you're 'graduating' with at that level are McDonalds Proficiency and Cinema Clerk Internship.

There's nothing more p*i*m*p or prestigious than attending a graduation ceremony for a D.Phil / D.Litt in your pimpgown!

Fuck the ceremony. When I graduated my Mum gave me £50 to pay the professional photographer to take my picture. Told her she didnt need to take a day of work bla bla to come.
We went to the bar, didn't even go to the ceremony, spent the money on booze. My Mum was none to pleased when I presented her with the £50 photo of me looking rather worse for wear which my mate took on his disposable camera. So on my mum's wall beside my sisters graduation photos is a blank space. 10 years later and she still gives me shit about it.

I'm not going to my high school graduation. Went to both my cousin's and it was the biggest waste of time. Sitting in an auditorium with hundreds of people for hours.

Rather just take the money and go out and spend the day with some of my closest friends.

So to answer your question...December.

Having to sit through my brother's graduation was so godawfully boring.

It's really just not worth it.

I'm guessing since this isn't highschool, you don't get the who grad thing, just the ceremony..

Too bad, cause my grad, after-grad, and then the AFTER AFTER grad in Whistler,BC partying for 3 nights was fucking epic.

The only reason you walk is for the pictures/family/rememberance. Do your parents want to watch you? I didn't walk, I got my diploma in the mail.
