He had a head full of scrambled shit, to put it briefly.
Put politely: How can a rational person be asked to "analyze the nature of the conflict at hand" when the subject of discussion is decidedly non-rational? go ahead and try to come up with a sane, rational explanation for the actions of a crazy person.
The parts of his mind that evaluate "proportional response", "justification", "reasonable", "values", "ethics" ... all twisted and warped.
Same kind of scrambled shit for brains that causes .. girlfirends to go suicidal when you dump them.. moms to kill their kids for crying too much.. suicide bombers to detonate themselves in shopping malls because whatever.. emo kids to shoot up their school..
.. Value system all out of proportion and sense = head full of scrambled shit.
The same gripes and complaints that may inspire a nominally sane person to write their congressman, run for public office, start a grass-roots movement, work for a charity, or donate money to a hospital -- causes mentally imbalanced people to decide they need to commit horrific acts to "make things right".
That's quite probably why they're called "imbalanced" -- the balance between situation and response is.. imbalanced.
Y'know.. dog pisses on the carpet so they start yelling "This is SpArTaAaAaA!!" and declaring World War III. yeah.. them kinds.
