Different bailout. And I guess we'll never know because Republicans won't have much of a say about anything for a few years.

GM should use the money to revive the EV-1.. they would destroy the competition with an affordable fully electric car.

Yes really. You're welcome.

PS George W. Bush, a Republican, and his Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson engineered the government bailout for banks.

They split half and half almost over the bill. 91 for, 108 against. Your trusty Republicans aren't as stalwart as you make them out to be. Let's not forget 63 Dems voted against it too. If the Reps had voted en masse against it, the bill wouldn't have passed. Oh well, guess your party blew it.

The bailout is a complete waste of money... its just an attempt to keep the bubble inflated

But if you were going to rank who should get money My list would go like this

1. infrastructure, infrastructure infrastructure
2. energy sources... nuclear battery tech, renewables and "drill baby drilll" etc
3. Auto industry b/c they actual produce a product
4. any other industry that a  produces physical product

As far as big banks and UGGGG AIG insurance Forget IT... they caused much of the problem and don't produce anything physical that people can use. these guys are real drain on the economy and we would be better off without big insurance and big banks. But magically these do nothing parasites are at the top of the bailout list and sucking all the money out, go figure that one out. For the amount of money that AIG was given.... how many nuclear batteries would that be???? imagine that money going to develop electric car battery technology!!! whatta waste

Wasn't it adjusted just as much because the Dems wanted a raft of petty nonsensical bullshit tax breaks incorporated and a hefty amount of extra regulatory oversight? By the way 'douche' means 'shower'. I never realised you were so adept at French. Some heritage there?

I was reading that Ford was brining a lot of it's euro division cars over.  Although it's a bit late in the day to do that, drove past a bmw dealership the other day and there so over flowing that there parking hundred grand cars on the road side....

I do wonder if the people who come up with this stuff actually have any fiscal education, let alone understanding.  They seem to be completly oblivious to how these problems come about, and litterally are trying to dig there way out of a hole.

Cut them off.

They need to just file for bankruptcy. The bailout going towards pensions is absolutely angering me.

If they don't restructure the sweetheart deals UAW has with the Big Three, they'll all go under.

I'm not going to hold my breath on that one.

I personally blame the Unions, the UAW slowly destroyed the companies over the years.  They may have brought changes to the job, better benefits and such, but look at the result.  The Japanese, Germans, etc can all put out a far better car at the same if not better price then most American cars.

One simple example, when my mom was shopping for a car, she was looking at minivans, for the cost of a stripped down Chevy Venture(or whatever they changed the name too) she could have gotten a fully loaded Honda.  If the unions would cut back on the demands, they would not only save their own jobs, they would help the companies.  Car prices for American cars would come down, and become more affordable in the same price bracket.

Long run in the unions lose, but if something ain't done, it wont matter. I love GM, but if they cant keep up by themselves, so long.

The 1960s had better cars than these.  At least they were more reliable back then.  This is exactly what killed the economy of Japan about 15 years ago.  The Japanese government kept supporting failing companies and it dragged the country down.

The bailout and the new one that looks like it will soon come are the main reasons why I'm still registered as independent.

It was pretty sad to see Obama, McCain, and Bush all agree to go through with the first bailout, and since a lot of Congress (and Obama) has some favors to pay back to GM and the unions, we're going to see a shitload of money thrown at our big automakers.

Yet, as Paul put it in the OP, bailouts only prolong the agony and fail to encourage the proper business decisions.  If Big Business knew it had no chance at getting their grubby hands on our tax money for bailouts, then they'd be more careful with their management of assets and expenses.

We've effectively sent Wall Street the message that we'll back them even when they defy common sense with their speculative schemes.  It looks like automakers will soon be getting their own message of "Don't worry, we'll pay for your tab."

IF the Democrats support this bailout, they might appease their union friends and get good press for "saving millions of jobs," but in the long run, it will just further weaken our economy and set things up for an even bigger collapse financially.

Iacocca paid us back.. yes he did. Unfortunately we've got idiots running multi-billion dollar companies today. Do you fellas realize they are still paying bonuses? Why? .. Because "the really bright talent might go to other companies". I shit myself laughing when I heard that.
