They're not too long for me, but regardless, why are the maps left compressed? Id assume half the loading time is just extracting the map files. Anyone know an specific reason for this?

#1, that sig is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay to tall, cut it down or cut it out.

#2, the load time is not that bad. You're CPU can very, very easily uncompress a zip file more than fast enough, moving the map into memory, however, along with the verification is what really takes so damn long.

I still dont even see the point of it. Its not like a I have too much of a problem, I not loading all these high quality geos and textures, but I dont see why they do it.

The point is, the game checks the single zip file, for each map. Those archives can contain more than 400 files. It's a hell of a lot faster verifying the single zip file, than the individual files contained in the archive. That is the reason for the compressed files. This is done to prevent modifying/cheating. If the MD5 verify fails, the game chokes.

Sure, but I would still prefer an option while installing, asking me if i want to use uncompressed files (using 1.5 GB more space) - it is quicker to check 400 STORED files than 400 compressed/deflated files in the zip arhives.

This would give a better loadtime than the current 2-3 mins from 0-100% + the 1 min of  "verifying client data"

Update:

I moved the entire BF 2 dir to my Raid-0 drive(s) in striped config

Then I just tried fistfullofclams idea (http://forums.bf2s.com/viewtopic.php?id=561&p=2   #40) of unpacking the common_client.zip and objects_client.zip files

Futhermore i did it with Fonts_client, Menu_client and Shaders_client,
Next i unpacked the client.zip files in each of all the map dirs (f.ex  ..levels\daliant_plant\client.zip to ..levels\daliant_plant\client\

Remember to KEEP the original zipfiles

Now i have a max 10 sec. loadingtime from I click "join server" to "Verifying Client Data"

(and i havent even defrag the HD yet..)

I have 2GB of Mushkin Extreme Perf ram only running at DDR400, and my maps load quicker than any of the other guys that usually play together.
