I feel like we haven't built one in ages.

And when was the last time we tested them? I mean shit, if all hell breaks loose we better make sure we've got working nukes. Nothing would be more embarassing than having a Minuteman missile land in the middle of Moscow and not blow up.

I mean, I know old George started this:

which hints to me that our weapons are aging like a faded hollywood star.

Aren't there treaties that prohibit the manufacture and testing of new nukes? Or has the US pulled out of all of them now?

Hmm.. I'm more worried about the condition of Russian nukes tbh. Imagine someone sneezes in a nuke silo there.. damn..

what do you mean by old though?  a rocket is a rocket.  guidance is always tested.  and the warheads are always replenished.

Nobody has tested nukes in a long time, there's all sorts of bans and treaties and shit like that. Last country to test a nuke was NK I think, and the last Western country was France, on one of their pacific islands.

The US, and most of the other nuke countries, have things like massive supercomputers to carry out simulations and calculations etc.. to make sure that their nuclear stockpiles are actually useful. I remember reading about some country developing a supercomputer (a really powerful one) just to analyse their nuclear stockpiles and carry out simulations etc..

Who the hell follows treaties? Doesn't the Geneva Convention ban the use of .50 cals and shotguns? lulz

@Marine, I mean deterioration through just... sitting there. Same idea as a swingset in a playground sitting there for 20 years. It'll start to break down.

@Mek I think I heard about those computers once, had to do with the Y10K problem

but what can they really do with them? inspect them? unless they've developed something at Area 51 that cloaks our nuke testing...

i dont know what you are aksing.  the rocket stages holding the fuel get replaced.  the computers get upgraded.  the nukes stay fresh.  i really do not get what you are asking.

The last Los Alamos test, and the last test conducted by the United States, Divider, took place on September 23, 1992. Divider, as test to ensure the safety of U.S. deterrent forces, had an announced yield of less than 20 kilotons. Since Divider, no tests of nuclear weapons have been conducted by the United States.

well i was under the impression that we couldn't really do anything with our nukes because of all the treaties that have been made over the years

hmmmm... let me try this.

when you open up a can of coke, it has always tasted like coke.  for many years yes?  so, the receipe works.  as long as it is kept fresh it will always taste yummy.

as far as i know, the half life of uranium/plutonium is a very very long time, so i wouldn't worry if that's what you're getting at hurricat.

Subject to another vote in about 5 years time, before the order is actually placed.

But, yeah. We're probably replacing Trident.

We don't need a replacement, what we have is good enough.

What if there is a safer system available?

System seems safe enough already. No point wasting money like that. MoD/Government needs to sort out its priorities imo.
