If I remember correctly, Uncle Tom was a slave in the story who, while knowing very well the cruelty of slavery, did not harbor hatred towards his masters.Uncle Tom is a pejorative for a black person who is perceived by others as behaving in a subservient manner to White American authority figures, or as seeking ingratiation with them by way of unnecessary accommodation. The term Uncle Tom comes from the title character of Harriet Beecher Stowe's novel Uncle Tom's Cabin, although there is debate over whether the character himself is deserving of the pejorative attributed to him. Stowe never meant Uncle Tom to be a degrading character, but the term as a pejorative has developed based on how later versions of the character, stripped of his strength, were depicted on stage
explain to me how one 'sucks up' to a white person please

You think that one sentence on wikipedia means Ralph Nader didn't mean that Uncle Tom comment as a negative thing?Hurricane2k9 wrote:

why dont you jackasses come out of the closet already and call anyone who doesnt like nor trust obama a racist. its all i can smell in any arguement, people telling me im not forward thinking cuz i dont support obama, i actually heard this comment from my roommate, and i quote..."duh, i voted republican cuz im retarded" and she was dead serious. nevermind the fact that none of them can tell me why they think obama is a good candidate when questioned, they just immediately say "mccain is a jackass" without even taking note that i support neither mainstream candidate.
same, its just an observation.usmarine wrote:

What does the phrase 'Uncle Tom' actually mean and where does it originate?A black man who will do anything to stay in good standing with "the white man" including betray his own people
Leroy is such an Uncle Tom; he told the boss I took a 2 hour lunch; I had to go see my baby mommahttp://www.urbandictionary.com/define.p … =uncle+tomTheatrical productions of Uncle Tom's Cabin played throughout the nadir (post Civil War and Reconstruction); but since the novel's indictment of slavery was no longer congenial to an increasingly white society, rewrites changed Uncle Tom from a martyr who gave his life to protect the people into a sentimental dope who was loyal to kindly masters. In the black community, Uncle Tom eventually came to mean an African American who sells out his people's interests and still does today. In my opinion the phrase "uncle tom" should not be used today by black people because it degrades the status of a man who wasn't in fact a sell out but a hero who's name should be used with reverence not disgrace.
Uncle tom, a martyr who should be admired til the end of time.

no. sup asked whether it was supposed to be a compliment or an insult, and i bolded that while it started off as simply an innocent title of a character, it got morphed into an insultRoc18 wrote:

While I agree with the general gist of what you're saying, Nader really is acting like a douche now. It seems with each passing year that the man just goes further and further out there.oug wrote:
honestly these people piss me off so bad
all of a sudden the same fuckers calling him Osama "by mistake" now became sensitive to this?
and it's not like Nader actually called him anything. He said that if he plays the corporations' game he will become. Future tense. And he's right about that.
So what the fuck is all the fuss about?
And let's not forget that bitch at the end. " mieh mieh mieh his career is over mieh mieh"
News for you BITCH! Some people actually care about political agendas, not fucking facades and empty characterizations. So fuck off and die in a fire at your new station. Bitch. You too fuckface.
It's like he's desperately grasping for media relevance any way he can. Baiting people with the "Uncle Tom" comment was about the easiest way he could get more attention.
