This is an area that the proponants of National Health Care always falter.  Wonder if they will even post in here, or if they will let it dry up and float down the list so they don't have to deal with it.

I've said many times on here that we need a public and private system here.  The public system is (should be) for preventative care and GP-type issues, and the private practice is (should be) for more specialized care.

That, actually, seems like a workable idea.  The Emergecy departments would also have to be nationally run, or at least contracted to private companies.  After all, no one is refused care in the Emergency room.  Granted, you may receive a bill that could bankrupt you, but if you can't pay it going in, they don't even charge you... I never understood that.

The question is, how would it work?  It sounds great in the abstract with no details, but starts to get really scary when you look at it closely. I would really prefer to tear down the current health insurance system and rebuild it from the ground up, getting rid of the HMOs entirely.  Oh, and competely revamp the FDA while we are at it.  It is not all the fault of the pharmacutical industry.

My wife saw an article about a German doctor who'd been working in Australia (on a work visa) for a while, in the rural areas. He wanted to become a citizen and live there permanently. The Aussie government said no. Why? Because his son has Down Syndrome and was deemed too much of a burden on the health care system there.

Here it is.

His temporary work visa is valid until 2010, but his application for permanent residency was rejected this week. The immigration department said Moeller's 13-year-old son, Lukas, "did not meet the health requirement."

"A medical officer of the Commonwealth assessed that his son's existing medical condition was likely to result in a significant and ongoing cost to the Australian community," a departmental spokesman said in a statement issued Thursday by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship.

"This is not discrimination. A disability in itself is not grounds for failing the health requirement — it is a question of the cost implications to the community," the statement said.
Not discrimination, my ass. Fucking ridiculous.

But nationalized health care is the best possible solution, isn't it?

I think that says more about Draconian Aussie immigration laws than nationalized health care.

That happens with US health insurance companies too. My mom's having a tough time finding a health insurance company that will take her because she has a pre-existing condition, which apparently disqualifies her.

She fucking needs the insurance too, because she has to take a fair amount of medication that without insurance costs A LOT.

Anyone know if Obama's health care plan will include coverage for immigrants?

Firstly, that's Australia. You might aswell look at China whilst you're at it.

Secondly, don't act like private health companies wouldn't do the same thing.

Thirdly, most countries also give you the option of going private, should you want to.

Fourthly, I personally don't like nationalised/universal healthcare. And I think it suits countries like the UK/European/Small countries, but really isn't the best option for a country like the US. Although, it's not like they wouldn't be able to afford it if they actually gave it a shot. At the very least, it should be subsidised more...

Aussieland really does sound bad though. You guys have ridiculous prices for games, ridiculous ratings boards (e.g. trying to get Fallout 3 banned or something like that), shitloads of poisonous creatures, and you don't let people become citizens because their kids have Downs syndrome.

For the most part, this is a lot of the reason why Canada's system fails.  They've tried to implement a socialized healthcare system with far less taxation than places like Australia, the U.K., France, and Ireland.

The WHO ranks Canada as only 2 spots ahead of us, which is why, if we're going to use a country as a role model for socialized healthcare, it should be France (ranked #1 in healthcare).

I've never been to Australia, but from what I can gather, it's a place with low crime, great social programs, great education systems, but two very big flaws....

nanny state policies in media and very corporatist telecoms that rape consumers with needless bandwidth caps.

Touche... but we do trust our government to invade and run other countries.  We trust it to spy on us with the Patriot Act.  Apparently, some people even trust it to tell people what gender of a person they can and can't marry.

So honestly...  getting the government to run our healthcare wouldn't be that far from what we currently trust it to engage in.
