News went out that the SA Attorneys-General Michael Atkinson has just 'censored the censorship debate' to quote The Age.

NEWS.com Article wrote:

The long-running debate on an adult rating for games in Australia may have been shut down by South Australian Attorney-General Michael Atkinson.

The debate was renewed last March when the Standing Committee of Attorneys-General (SCAG) agreed to public consultation on an R18+ games classification.

However Mr Atkinson has rejected plans to publish the consultation results, effectively shelving the discussion process.

Unlike film, video games can only be classified up to MA15+, and the law cannot be changed without the consent of the Commonwealth and each state and territory attorney-general.

A study released by the Interactive Entertainment Association of Australia (IEAA) this week showed 91 per cent of Australian respondents – both gamers and non-gamers – support an R18+ rating for games.

It also showed that the average age of Australian gamers is now 30, and only 1 per cent of all games classified in the last year exceeded an MA15+ rating.

Mr Atkinson has spoken out against an R18+ rating for games repeatedly, telling South Australian state parliament earlier this year that children needed to be protected from adult games.

A spokesperson for Victorian Attorney-General Rob Hulls, a supporter of the ratings change, told Fairfax while the issue was formally still on the SCAG agenda, "it appears unlikely that there will be unanimity from all jurisdictions to proceed further at this stage with introducing an R18+ category for computer games."

Australia is the only developed country without an adult rating for games.

Now what gets to me is this, Australia likes to call itself a representative democracy, yet one man's opinion can effectively censor the nation. Can we stand with the rest of the 'free world' and claim to be a 'free' nation when one man's opinion can do this?

Gg. The best part? Games that get R18/17 classifications else-where like Far Cry 2 (UK, 18+) or Dead Space (USA, 17+) get 15+ tags here. He's not protecting anybody, he's just being ignorant.

Doesnt he realise that the R18+ category actually protects kids from buying unsuitable games. Probably not.

What I dont understand is how games are worse than movies?

By Atkinsons logic, any child could get their hands on an R18+ movie...surely real life violence and drug use, etc are worse than video game portrayals? I mean games look much better than they once did, but they sure arent RL graphics.

Reaper, thats the one.

Taking back the liberal party at the moment would be a nightmare. especially with Malcom " Theres no financial crisis" Turnbull, and Julie "Plagiarism is my friend" Bishop at the helm. Still at least they are better than Nelson. Scary thing is that Turnbull is too far towards the centre politically for most of the Liberal party. They really cant stand the guy. They would much prefer to be in a govt where Climate change is denied, all illegal immigrants are locked up until they try to commit suicide, and workers could be paid slave wages ( ahh the good old days).

Yeah, no matter how bad the labor govt is (I like the fed labor party for the most part, state labor nsw is crap atm) I'll never vote liberals. If I don't like the labor party, I'll protest vote and vote for the Greens.

State labor is letting us down a bit. More of an excuse to abolish the states all together ( probably wont happen in my lifetime). Still I actually do hope the Liberal get their act together, as strong opposition makes a strong govt. Apart from a few decisions that I think really suck ie, means testing solar homes groject, clean feed, and being somewhat slow when it comes to making decisions, they are doing a pretty good job. Strong opposition would keep them on their toes though.

Turnbull's problem is a distinct lack of anything resembling a solid policy on any issue. He either copycats Rudd's latest press release, promises bi-partisanship or just criticises Labor's latest policy/legislative decision on principle.

It's not the Libs don't like him, it's just they'd rather have somebody else. I happen to know a few liberal party members. Know a LOT of the NT's CLP members, for the most part they don't like him. Then again some of them didn't much like Howard either.

Actually is you remove Rudd and Turnbull from politics there would be a distinct lack of talent on either side. As a Labor suporter I could probably name a couple if pressed, but I would be looking pretty hard. I'm pretty sure the same could be said for the Libs.

Flecs your probably talking about the former National party members, now CLP's, who would always prefer their own leader rather than a coalition Liberal leader.

ANy yeah burwhale, a good opposition is what is needed to keep a Govt. on it's toes. NSW liberals are in shambles and have been for a long time. They can never seem to find the right leader.
