I think it should be mandatory. Everybody who is capable should/must pitch in with respect to defence of their country.
Defense imo changes the argument slightly, the threat is certainly increased even if you don't enlist.

Although I think that if your country is attacked, the amount of people who do suddenly enlist would\should come close to not needing conscription in the first place due to numbers.

America is not really worth defending or dying for.

I like the German system of Wehrpflicht, AFAIK you either serve the military for 9 months or civil service for 6 years (100 hours/yr). Guess I'd like to spend the 9 months studying and/or working. But I wonder if it really helps shaping the youth.
Nine months almost sounds like a waste of training.

You would change your mind if you went.

The only way this would work is if it was like a really fast, to the point, no bs intense training program thing. Then, maybe. But it could never be like this if it's mandatory and everyone has to go. The way it is now, trust me. At best it's a waste of time.

Has anyone who said yes it should be mandatory and is a good thing, considered the idea that the women could or would be conscripted also?

I would be thinking of somewhere in the region of two years. Is that too short?

No, please.  There are some people, especially here in the US, who have not only no desire but also no excuse for being in uniform.  There are people here who, were they in uniform, would be good only for the job of Bullet Sponge (to soak up enemy bullets to keep them from hitting actual useful people).  Granted, there are non-combat positions in the military, but there are very, very few non-important jobs.  How would you like your cook to be a lazy, incompetant, resentful conscript?  How about your mechanic?  Your air-traffic controller?  Would you want your finance specialist to 'forget' to authorize you pay because they wanted to go home early?

Not to mention, but there are people in the US who would not only not defend their country, but would actually assist the enemy in bringing it down.  And we grant them the same freedoms we give anyone else, so they are free to do it.

I say nay.

I don't want to be serving as a volunteer with people who are forced into the military since they won't care most of the time. It's easier to trust someone who volunteered to serve than who's forced.

For instance, I'll use myself as an example. I joined the Navy last August. I'm a Corpsman because I want to be one, even though I'm stuck with the half of the job I didn't want to do. When I go "green side" soon, I'll be out with Marines doing combat medic stuff.

So, lets say you're the Marine. Would you trust someone like me, who volunteered and wants to be a Corpsman, or someone who's forced into being a Corpsman, one who doesn't give a damn about his/her job?

I think you should have to serve in the Military to be able to hold public office. Kinda like they had in Starship Troopers(book)

But that would also cause them to not be so liberal with the lives of the Military. If we went to war it would be for a damn good reason and then they would know to let the Military run it not tie our hands across our backs, i.e. let us do our jobs and not pussy foot around.

I will use Iraq as a example, we would have been done and out of that country 2yrs ago if they wouldn't have been trying to run the war from Washington. I guess the silver spoon bastards didn't learn from Vietnam.

Might have been easier to topple Sadam the same way you tried to topple Castro with a revolution, prompted from the sidelines. Only real problem with that, is the next in line needs to be more moderate and controllable.

But yeah, certainly. Had Washington laid out objectives that were clear and concise, gave the Military the go ahead to achieve these objectives with extreme prejudice it would have been over and done with long, long ago.
