What about how so many American posters have such clear opinions on Europe supposedly being full of cheese-eating, surrender monkeys who happily roll over on their pile of welfare cheques and allow Mohammed to slowly rape them from behind!

The ignorance door swings both ways my friend!
How about it, then maybe you shouldn't have a history of surrender, eating cheese, or rolling over on your socialist welfare, while allowing Islam to gain a foothold on your countries.
Who has a history of surrender?

The Romans had a pretty nice empire once upon a time.
The UK won WW1 and WW2 and took over half the planet during their imperial days.
Russia won won WW2 and the recent war in Ossetia and took over half of Europe during the days of the USSR.
Ireland won the first leg of the war of Independence with Britain (second leg currently in extra time and may go to penalties!).
France, despite a recent dip in form, once had a vast empire under great leaders like Napolean.
...doesn't really add up to a culture of surrender lowing.

Eating cheese?

Guilty as charged... and proud of it. Nothing like a nice piece of Brie.

Rolling over on welfare cheques?

One or two of us maybe... better than having to step over tons of homeless people in the streets.

Allowing Islam to gain a giant foothold in your countries?

Did someone change the definition of "giant" without telling me? They are an insignificant minority my good friend, you may scare easily on your side of the water but we Europeans are made of sterner stuff!
1. Europe was overtaken by Germany, every nation surrendered to them less England and the rest coloaborated with them, what happened 1,000 years ago does not really matter, your empire is reduced to an Island in the Atlantic.

2. No sweat I like cheese as well.

3. Really? You only have 1 or 2 Eueopeans suckig on the govt. tit? Now c'mon Braddock am I really to believe that?

4. Here we go again they are insignificant, yet seem ot shake up the entire world with every bombing.

i completely understand where you are coming from regarding experience.

doing something>reading about it...any day.

dont get me wrong, i will still learn from books every day of my life.....but i can read about hammering steel all day long. it doesnt mean im gonna get any better at it. no, not until i go out and try what i just read about.....you know how many different ways i read to make damascus steel before i finally found the way that worked for me? the key word there is "found". yes, the knowledge i gained from reading helped, but at the end, it was my mistakes that taught me how to do it....not text.

same goes with firearms. i have learned all sorts of cyclic rates, calibers and things like stances, etc.
and again, i learned some things, but reading doesnt make you proficient with firearms. putting lead on target as often as you are able is how you do that.

reading has value, but i learn from my mistakes....which gives me experience.
Unless you've secretly been a senator or congressman for the last few years then it's hardly a similar situation. If you have been working in the higher levels of US government then fair enough, you know more, but just living under the system gives no magical knowledge of anything. It's more like claiming to have special knowledge of how GM works because you've bought one of their cars.

Yeah but it didn't even matter cuz the Jermanz never wanted Wales. They would have conquered all of Europe save Wales cuz it's the most insignificant piece of land on the whole damn continent. I mean srsly, it's just drunks, chavs and sheep.

sorry.
This is a discussion about how living under a political system gives you some superior knowledge about how it works than anyone looking at it from the outside. Read the first couple of pages of this thread. I assumed you were talking about the same thing as the rest of the posts in this thread. Sorry for thinking your post was on topic.

Here is a perfect example of how PureFodder doesn't get it (don't know why you felt the need to inject your well-formed opinion, topal, but thanks for nothing). And if I'm not worth your time, then please do remove your arrogant ass from this discussion.

The more proper analogy (if PF had actually understood what was said originally) would be someone who works for GM having a better understanding of how GM works than someone who had read a book or two about how GM works.

But the problem you run into when dealing with people who have a lot of academic experience and little to no real-world experience, is that they feel their understanding is better because it's unsullied by non-academic types. That kind of attitude fails everywhere except inside the hallowed halls of academia.

The idea that simply living in a country and experiencing a small fraction of the policies created by the political process in you country somehow gives you an insight into how the political system works makes no sense. You can happily live under a political system without even the slightest knowledge about how it works.

If you worked directly in the forming and shaping of governemnt policy then fair enough, you have gained valuable experience. What your suggesting is that having experienced the properties of the metal in your car and set of drill bits, you've now gained some valuable insight into how those metals were created.

That's not at all what I'm saying. You are reading far too much into it.

Those of us who live here experience the impact of that political system in our daily lives. In general, you don't--you experience the impact of your political system in your daily lives. So we are far better suited, through the experience of our daily lives, to wax philosophic on the impact of our political system on our daily lives. You are not. Just as we are not equipped to do the same with your political system, as we don't live under it day to day.

That's not saying we can't read a book about the Parliamentary system and read some current events about politics in jolly old England...but that reading wouldn't qualify us to tell you what it's like now or what your lives would be like if X were to change there.
