I have an essay due in 2 weeks from today for my 'Special Topic'. I still have no idea what to do. The main idea of the 'Special Topic' is to pick a small event in history that would not be in major high school History books. Any ideas for what to do? Help would be very much appreciated.

My historical interests:

American foreign policy(s) 1900 - Present day
*Vietnam
*Korean war

Irish history.

Hitler, Mussolini / Dictatorship/fascism in Europe 1900 - Present day

Would like war/battle related Links on the information too please.
Also: This is just for my teacher so she knows what I'm doing for it, the real thing isnt due to April 09, I think.

Here's a few of my favorite movies so you get an idea of what I would be interested in doing:
Full Metal Jacket
American History X
Blackhawk Down
Saving Private Ryan
Platoon
American Gangster
The Wind That Shakes The Barley
Braveheart

ect...

So - I would also be interested in doing something 'Neo-Nazi' or 'American life in the 19**' related.

Help please

In my high school, Vietnam and Korea were shoved into the same chapter; the same paragraph, if I remember right. AFJROTC made up for that with its own history books, but other than that, unless your books have more coverage than ours, Vietnam and Korea could still be in there.

How about this:

a) Write about treatment towards Irish immigrants in America in the 1800's.
b) Pick a foreign event significant to its country that is of little interest to your own.
c) If you must make it war-related, talk about the pre-war catalysts as well as decisive battles, and the overall impact on the nation(s) involved.
d) Here's a few: Spanish Civil War; Mexican-American War; Boxer Rebellion.

maybe look at post war europe. go back to where ww2 started, poland. ww2 was started to stop a foreign government controlling poland.  for the next 40 years poland was controlled by a foreign governemnt.

God damn it you want something that is not in a typical high school history book. WW2 is going to be there. Trust me.

If you still want the wars though, there's plenty you could do with WW1. (one of my fav topics)

Plenty of movies worth watching too if your lazy. All Quiet On The Western Front and The Blue Max are must see's.

You can look at sub-topics within WW1. The battle for air supremacy. First fighter aircraft. First trench warfare is developed, due to machine guns tearing away battle formations the whole war became trench warfare with stalemates in many places.

Look up The Schlieffen plan. If you want something not in a typical "American" textbook that you could still find huge amount of material for, look up the Gallipoli Campaign and\or The Charge of the Light Horse brigade (The Battle of Beersheba).

Plenty of sources available you can find yourself through google.

Why not write about how Ireland didn't think it worthwhile to fight the Nazis?
That should cover both your Nazi and WW2 interests - no battles though, sorry.

No but, yeah but, no but seriously -

Write about how the US found itself invading Iraq, after Saudis, working out of Afghanistan, attacked them on 9/11.
No-one knows why even now, so it won't be in any of your high-school books.

I did my special interest history essay on Hitler's connections to the occult. I got a B+ at honours level, which is no mean feat for what is a tough exam.

Do something on fascism in Ireland... Eoin O'Duffy and the blueshirts and how they helped Franco during the war and how Fine Gael are basically the fascist party of Ireland disguised as respectable politicians (they would prefer Ireland not to be neutral supposedly!). Eoin O'Duffy had supposedly attempted a 'March on Dublin' in the style of the march on Rome and the powers that be were, for a time, genuinely concerned at the prospect of some sort of quasi-fascist coup. Quite interesting stuff.

I recently read a lot about german history between the first and the second world war, especially the situation in Berlin.

It's very interesting how the different political mindsets tried to get power, which impact the russian revolution had on all this and especially how that situation led to Hitler getting into power. Scenes of this time occur all the time everywhere on this planet, and I think you can learn a lot about today's politics work.
