$6.4bn down, $693.6bn to go
Taiwan is an independent nation anyway, they're allowed to do whatever they want. Besides it's not like the PRC doesn't do this. Who gives a shit if this pisses off the PRC, what are they going to do? Nothing, because they can't.

Read the article.
We have before.
We have before.
Nothing new. Certainly not newsworthy.

A political gesture. i.e. militarily watered down. If the US really wanted to piss the PRC (& make more $$) off they would have thrown in the F-16 C/D deal as well.
I'm fairly sure that China could still flatten Taiwan even with these weapon sales. The Us has been selling Taiwan weapons for ages, why has this suddenly become news?
Isn't Taiwan fairly secure already?
China may gripe about American weapons so close to it's coastline, but the Chinese will take no actions, we are their number one trading partner after all
(hell, I'll bet the Chinese welcome the chance to get a closer look at our equipment)

That's pretty much the point. The US sells Taiwan weapons so they can last a little bit longer, if China decided to invade. That strengthens US/Taiwan support (indicating commitment), makes the Taiwanese feel safer, and would allow the US enough time to get POed should something actually happen (unlike Georgia, where everyone got angry after the party ended).
