Not sure how it is in the UK, but I imagine having some sort of lock on a shed may be useful for insurance purposes, even if it can be broken.

I make sure all my door & windows are locked before going out, even if I'm just going round the corner for a minute. I also have a claw hammer underneath my bed within arms reach in case some meth fiend breaks in during the night. Messing intruders up is generally illegal, but these days you can't afford to assume they only want to flog something and bugger off.

Its not 'appeasement' just dumb logic.

Advice from MI5 on how to protect your home and property:-

Lock external doors etc, make your house hard to get into, dog, climbing roses.

If someone does get in you want minimal damage, and you want them out ASAP.
- Don't lock internal doors, cupboards etc - once in they will smash them to pieces, no-one will see or hear.
- Leave GBP50 on the table with a note 'This is for the plumber, I'll be back in ten minutes'
Most likely its just some scumbag looking for a fix, if they can take your 50 quid instead of your tv (which they'll only get 20 for) or ransacking your house everyone wins.

Its not appeasement, just prudence in the shitty state the law and order system is in in the UK right now.
