Hi !

Today i played a few rounds with BF2 1.02 before i installed 1.03.

But now the program starts, but when i try to connect to a server i get the error message: "invalid cd-key".

Although i have a original cd with original cd-key. And no, noone was able to "steal" my cd-key ...

Anybody in here with the same problem ?  Does anybody have a solution ?

EA's totally stuffed it... they need a patch to fix it.

If it's installed on 1 user account (admin), you can't use it on the other account. It returns: 'Your CD Key is invalid".  One user can play the game, the other cannot.   This did not happen before the botched v1.03 patch.

There is a fix, but this is ridiculous if I want to play on my Windows account and my bro wants to play on his. I guess he can log in to my account if he really wants to play, but this is stupid.

From the official EA UK Forums:

AFTER RELEASING a patch for Battlefield 2 earlier today, EA is now likely having a nice time cataloguing problems people seem to have with it.
Thanks to a couple of responses from readers this morning we've found a distinct problem with the latest patch for Battlefield 2. It looks like the 1.03 patch encrypts the CD-key value in the windows registry. Most likely this is done to avoid the theft of CD-keys by malicious software while you're playing online. It's a clever move.

Unfortunately, it looks like this encryption of the CD-key is specific to the Windows User Account that was used to install the patch. If any other Windows user attempts to play the game on the same machine they are given a message saying the key is invalid.

maybe just make a guest account on windows that you both can access and install it on there or something even though you shouldnt have too, but only if you dont want anyone to see your porn or something.

Found a possible solution myself:

Go to the Battlefield2 folder, enter folder "Support" and the the files named something like "battlefield2_code.exe".

Re-enter your CD-Key and BF2 should work.

Hi !

I fixed the problem yesterday with trial & error, but now it works.

1.) I installed BF2 and 1.02

2.) I downloaded NO WINDOWS INSTALLER VERSION of Patch 1.03  ( see http://forums.bf2s.com/viewtopic.php?id=2179 )  and installed it

3.) Problem:  BF2 ends up with RETURN TO DESKTOP instead of showing the EA GAMES LOGO and so on ...

4.) Solution:  Run the official EA Installer Patch, choose a language, click next and STOP before clicking next again. Go to TEMP and find the file "BF2CDKeyCheck.exe" and copy it to your BF2 folder. Then chancel the patch installation.

5.) Run ..\Battlefield2 \ Support \ Battlefield2_code.exe, re-enter your CD-Key. Afterwards run the BF2CDKeyCheck.exe, it will run very short without any output.

6.) If BF2 still doesnt start, try to re-run the official Patch 1.03 Installer. Although it's not successful with installing the patch, it made a change to my system so Battlefield2 runs and the "INVALID CD-KEY"-Error is gone   :-)

I know, thats not a solution for those how cant run the official patch because of not having enough space left on system drive, but i dont have another solution right now.

Hey, L.E.Alpha.tUeTe....

Thanks for that information.

I tried the method you describe above and when you start the patch installer and hit next, the file "BF2CDkeyCheck.exe" never shows up in the TEMP directory.  Am I missing something?

I did get it to work by re-running the patch installer program under both accounts on my system. ( I log on to a domain and locally hence two accounts )

Hope that helps others with the same problem.

Thanks,
