I only got SF yesterday and palyed a bit of Iron Gator before the patch, but from what i saw mec our really screwed without that chopper. It's the only thing that can worry the seals

Still I managed to snipe the pilot out

That map sucks now, especially since every time I play I end up on MEC.  When the round ends and I switch to SEALS I always get switched back to MEC by either the server or someone on the server.

Total BS.  I avoid that map like the plague now.

well... Actually crossing the carrier isn't that hard. All it does require really is, strategy... I am guessing many of you (including myself), want the heli that your piloting to make it from the island and to the carrier. The best thing for this is: When you get in the MECSF chopper at the start of the match, the 1st thing that will happen usually is, that you will here your alarm telling you are locked on by the enemy. The hard bit is taking off, once you are above ground fly as high as you can... FLY SO HIGH, THAT THE FOG COVERS YOU... And you will eventually be out of range from the Essex.

PS: When you are gaining altitude, always let your flares out when you are not locked on properly.
2nd: KEEP MOVING IN THE SKY!... You must strafe around in the sky sometimes to help dodging the missiles.
And thirdly: If you are flying alone...Then get in the passenger seat... For some reason, flying with no pilot will make you go higher faster.

Hope this has helped some people .

As for boats and APC's... The essex still doesn't make much of a difference to these things. (still a struggle though).

EDIT: I fogot to mention that if you are in the transheli... Try and actually fly inside the carrier. Fly through an opening near the elevator. This is bound to get a flag sinse most of the enemies are on the flight deck taking out boats. (This is my version of a sneak attack ).

Heh I can see it working, yesterday I was on MECSF and we filled up the transport heli, gainied altitude and  all parachuted over the carrier. 2 of us made it to a flag but we were taken out just before it came under our control

Nah what sucks on Iron Gator after playing quite a bit, is people who are very good flying the copters that fire rockets etc is they can hover around and destroy things to easy. In fact they stand in front of the big door and mock everyone killing everyone in sight.  It's almost impossible to destroy. The copters are too strong and need to be very powerful attack machines but not allow them to just stand there and blow everyone away without being afraid of being struck themselves.  The missle launchers the soldiers carry should take down the copters in 1 hit just like in real life and in BF 1

Its easy to get aboard the Iron Gator if you have a good MECSF team.  All you have to do is use the helos for a distraction, and send every other player on the boats and jet skis accompanied by the APC to the little boat hanger off the engine room side.  Take the engine room and Mess Hall and the MECSF team should be in good shape.  The Iron Gator is becoming one of my favorite maps, I think its a great map on either side.

I haven't tried this yet, but what about using the grappling hook from the 3rd position of the boat to get to the deck? The single entrance off the back sucks, so if you can make secondary entry points for the boats, it would help this map be a lot more interesting.
Not playing tonight, so I a hoping someone else is willing to try this... :?

That's bs I can get on the boat every time. Just fly low along the edge of the map around the back side of the boat and fly into the Hanger Bay Aft it works almost all the time. At the beginning of most rounds guys focus too much on the Top of the boat and the wet bay to remeber about the hanger bay aft.

Got my Iron Gator BRS of 129 a few days ago as commander for the MEC.  We took the topmost flag, and I then manned the Essex guns.   When not UAVing, I would constantly take down the enemy UAV and keep the enemy chopper grounded.  Whenever a SEAL tried to get near the flag, I would nail him with the Essex guns.  A team mate or two would cover the other side of flag.  Awesome round.

I just tried it, and the assualt kit in Iron Gator doesnt have the grappling hook.  Looking at it from the boat though, it would defianatly be possible if we were allowed the grappling hook.

MEC can board the ship via the engine room AND capture that flag before the Seals are able to get to the engine room, all it takes is one player on the MEC to know about this and most of the time MEC will usually win.

Otherwise, the only other way that’s likely to work is by using the APC to enter the engine room, most of the time the MEC will constantly enter the engine room in boats which is great for the Seals as they get a constant flow of free kills. However bringing the APC into the engine room forces the US to hide out the back allowing the MEC to climb the ladders in safety, their best bet then is to go straight up to the deck and attack the Seals on the deck from behind and take the flag. The worst possible thing the MEC can do using this tactic is to leave the APC in the engine room however.

Once the MEC get a flag on the ship, this is the best CQC map in the game imo.

This is NOT true.  There is one spawn point that allows the SEALs to get to the docking bay before even a MECSF jetski can get in there.  There is another that allows the SEALs to get to the engine room just after the MECSF but before a single player can complete the capture.

But given that few people seem to spawn there and then head to the docking bay / engine room area, Kobrakai is correct that a MECSF (if on a jetski) can usually get to the engine room first.

But even getting the engine room is no guarantee of a MECSF win, it just gives them a chance.

I love this map and love playing it from MEC. What sucks on MEC is transport chopper pilots that drop you on the friggin flight deck where everyone is just waiting to blow the crap out of you. It pisses me off.

Either flow high or low around the outside of the map, come in to the aft hangar bay or drop folks off on the end of the deck furthest from the flight deck.

Second, once you've made it to someplace safe in the ship, don't go running to cap a flag. You'll just alert everyone that you're there. Create a squad, hide someplace safe and be a spawn point for your squad. Let them go cap the flag while you remain hidden and a way for them to quickly get back on the ship. They will eventually cap a flag and then the fight is on.

Its so bloody simple, but most folks would rather drop everyone on top of the biggest concentration of the enemy topside. Then they want to engage. Its stupid. Use your heads and win the battle.

Quite an interesting thread.

Also what else is interesting is the fact I got BOTH my Helicopter Specialist Ribbons on this level - 2 days after 1.2 was released, and yes, I was MEC... (20 and 22 Kills Respectively, 20 minutes flying Helo.)

[UK]Blazing.Armour is spot on with suggesting to take the Heli up to insane altitudes to begin the assault via air. I launch the Chopper backwards from the island and keep launching up... you only have about 5 seconds worth of lock-on from the Essex before you're out of range, and for most decent pilots, that is acheivable.

Launch the chopper high enough so that you can do a complete nose dive on TOP of the Flight Deck on the Iron Gator. Normally there are a large handful of AT, Support and Medic Infantry waiting to take out the land and water vehicles. I managed to scrape 8 kills on the first nose dive alone. And what's best is they don't even see you coming because it's a 90 degree drop from the heavens.

I call that tactic "Death from Above." It usually works.

From then on, mayhem. Just stick to the Flight Deck side of the Iron Gator, and you'll be out of the claws of the Essex. Then common sense prevails. Watch for AT and the US Chopper. *shrugs*

rofl - you're just playing with the wrong people. I played last night and the MEC team I was on won both rounds. Iron Gator is really hard, and if you win as MEC, it really feels great! It's a good map, designed to encourage team-work, communication, and strategy that the others maps don't (not nearly to the same extent anyway).

To summarise: Iron Gator rocks. Choose your team carefully. Win.

Ever thought of using the BTR-90 to blast the USS Essex's AA Gun?

Teamwork is the key on T.I.G. without that you will lose the round.

Best method is to deploy the BTR-90 into the water and take aim at the AA gun, having the Tunguska guarding the airspace against the Apache. Once those to are down move in the choppers, capture the Flight deck and you in.

With the BTR-90 keeping the AA offline and the Mi-24 guarding the flight deck area it is really easy keeping the flag on the deck.

However inside the ship is a whole different ball-game. You need good squad based players that help eachother survive.

The Essex AA gun can also be taken out with an AT round from one of the inflatables.   While playing AT class, just switch to a position other than F1 or F2 and hit it with an antitank round.  And of course it can be done from onboard or even while parachuting in.

One hit has done it most times I've tried it, but one time it took two.  Might be that I only thought I hit it the first time.

You need more than 1 AT Eryx round to destroy it, but most off the time the turret has been damaged by a helo/btr/tunguska.

I just got sf's yesterday
played Iron gator for first time today
sucked
pkm whoring was wasting the shit out of me

Im thinking I should have tried to play single player to learn sf's maps
going into it like I did just killed my k/d

I know my stats are not great to begin with, but sf's has wasted me

I may grow to like it,really doubt it though

if I uninstall sf's will I have to re-patch bf2  ?

*on a high note, getting four unlocks that can be used in core bf2 has been the only highlight
sf's has shown me so far...

Great map, IF and it is a big if, you get people that know how to work in a team.  Can't tell you how pissed I get when you are MEC and instead of waiting until people get into your boat and mounting some kind of coordinated attack, one guy jumps in a boat and hauls ass to the Essex, only to die right away.
