I was in the U.S. Navy (The Greatest Navy in the World).
Went to Great Lakes Naval Training Center for basic training.
I was a GMT3 (Gunners Mate Tech) then they changed to rating
to GMM (Gunners Mate Missiles). Was a gnats ass away from 2nd class sad

I worked on ASROC Mk16 Mod 8 Launching System.
Was stationed aboard the U.S.S Elmer Montgomery FF 1082 (Hence my name elmer1082).
Did TAD aboard U.S.S. Missouri BB 63 right out of Gunners Mate C-School.
Mighty Mo was getting refitted for modern warfare at the time. I wish I would
have chosen her instead of the Monty, when I look back at it all. But i wouldn't
trade the experience for anything.

im not in a branch right now...but my claim to military fame is getting sh*tass drunk with a squad of SAS blokes fresh off Selection in Kenya. that is still one of the most memorable nights of my life.

middle of nowhere at some small bar up in the mountains. sit down next to some young brits...seemed a wierd place for a bunch of young guys that looked tough as sh*t.

i could tell they were military, but didnt know they were SAS. after a few hours a couple of the guys started telling me about their selection they had just completed. 8 weeks in the jungle with just your knife and canteen.lol

its safe to say they drank their weight in beer. and we bought it for them this was in about '94 when the macarena was popular. picture about 20 drunk squaddies in a line doing the macarena....lmao

Really don't know how your going to go special forces right after basic when enlisting in as infantry. Not possible, as Special Forces is an MOS, not just another occupational skill. 11B AIT is 4 weeks and 18x training is 40+ weeks. Better get some stuff straight before enlisting.

for the other poster. 11B refers to the MOS Infantry in the US Army.

Don't forget 3 weeks of Airborne....and I quote "18X isn't actually an MOS (Military Occupation Specialty). Instead, it's an enlistment option. Until recently, the only way to join the Army Special Forces was to apply after achieving the grade of E-4.

Under the 18X enlistment option, recruits are guaranteed the opportunity to "try out" for Special Forces. It does not guarantee that the recruit will be accepted into the Special Forces program. It only guarantees that the recruit will be given the opportunity to see if he "has the stuff."

A recruit who enlists in the 18X Special Forces enlistment program will attend Infantry OSUT (One Station Unit Training), which combines Army Basic Training and Infantry AIT (Advanced Individual Training), all in one 17-week course"

If you'd like to read a little more http://www.goarmy.com/JobDetail.do?id=344

and here is a little more http://www.training.sfahq.com/quali_special_forces_available_f.htm

i'll quote a little of it:  "The new program is only open to infantry soldiers in the 11B and 11C Military Occupational Specialty fields with a GT score of 110 or higher, compared to the normal requirement of 100. "This is a fantastic opportunity for people just joining the Army because they will get a lot of advanced training typically not offered to younger soldiers," Nichols said."

I don't appreciate being talked to like I'm some teenager with delusions of grandeur.  A. I'm a 23 year old with his head firmly planted on his shoulders, and B.  I have done plenty of research into this and have talked with a recruiter, and ex-green beret, on many occasions.  The only information I post is either paraphrased or quoted verbatim from them.

better get ready to be a PT stud if you aint already.....Its cool you got those goals man, but you have a whole bunch steps you gonna go through in benning before even airborne school.  Out of the hundreds of soldiers ive met over my years, ive only met about 5 that made it through selection and 0 that actually passed the course (excluding actual green berets).

Well, don't know why you said your going in as 11B first. As you are not. You are going to infantry OSUT, but not under the MOS 11B. If you fail the training for SF, then you will be placed in an MOS, which will be 11B. And don't speak to me like I don't know shit because you misworded your opening statement. As for special forces good luck. I plan on going to RIP hopefully. Then maybe be in a Ranger Battalion and then possibly go to Ranger school. We'll see. I really need to improve on running. Can do pushups no problem, just can't run for the life of me. Fastest mile is 6:52. But I couldn't see doing 5 miles in under what is it 40 minutes? Just not good at endurance. Again, good luck, just make your wording more clear. And don't be so defensive, explain and others shall understand. Only reason I didn't go SF is the language part of it. Not to big on taking a language course for over 20+ weeks. Just me though.

My apologies for being overly defensive.  You are correct, I should have explained myself better with my opening statement.  Yes, I will need not only luck but a lot of mental strength to achieve what i want to achieve.  Good luck to you with Ranger school, just remember that it's either with the tab or on a slab.  I definitely am not about to let myself fail.  I'm either gonna earn the Green Beret or they are gonna have to cart my body out of there.  Again, my apologies for my unclear statement, good luck to you and all of the others already in service or considering it.
