I didn't put this in tech cause I want everyone's opinion.

What size hard drive should I get if I'm thinking of buying a PS3. Has anyone here ran out of space (or know someone that has) on one of the smaller ones? Is a 40GB enough?

Please don't try to convince me to buy a 360. I want your opinion on the PS3.

Thanks in advance.

40 gb should be fine, but they're making the 80 gig one lower in September IIRC. Plus, you can always upgrade in the future since the PS3 allows you to install other HDD's.

Get a 40, unless you really need backwards compatibilty.

There is a small door on the side. Open it, the hard drive slides out. 4 screw, drop 160gig hard drive in its place, push back into PlayStation.
Literally that easy, and doesn't void warranty.
If you are only worried about disk space its cheaper to buy low and upgrade it yourself.

Thanks guys. I didn't know you could swap the HD's.

Can I piggy-back on this thread?

Someone mentioned what seems like only the 40 GB PS3's are backwards compatible. Is that really true? I didn't know the HDD mattered, I thought they were all backwards compatible. I'm eventually going to buy a PS3, but if only the 40 is compatible, that's gonna suck for me

The 40 is NOT backwards compatible with PlayStation 2 (but is with ps1)

I dunno about the 60, but I believe that the 80 IS backwards compatible with PS2.

go big, go 80gb. You can always pick up a bigger HD in the future

The 80 is going to be exactly like the 40 gb version except for the bigger hard drive. So no bc.

Well that sucks. Why wouldn't the 40 be backwards compatible with PS2? Who the hell still plays PS1 games?

Because it would increase the price to include more hardware in it....Who the hell still plays PS2 games

So they are gonna start selling an 80 at around the price the 40 is now? Will they continue to sell the 40, but for even cheaper?

Me cause I'm behind the times as far as consoles go

Well, yeah... but isn't buying a PS3 like.... bringing you back up to date with consoles?

Yeah. I guess I'll keep my PS2 (the big fat ancient one) in case I want to play the older games.

Go for the 40 gig and swap out the hard drive if needed. You don't need the backwards compatibility if you have a ps2.

lol, was kinda meant as a joke, seeing as how they still make PS2 games....

PS2 games were fairly good, but just like moving to PS2 from PS1 once you get a few games to keep you busy you forget about the old ones. I honestly never played a single PS1 game on my PS2... I would probably play PS2 games on my PS3 once or twice, but its really not a bother to me.

Edit:
So does anyone know if the 40 gig will still be offered and if its price will drop?

Also FUCK YEAH!! I have been trying to remember my PSN password for weeks, and I just got it right!

On the topic of backwards compatability, I believe the PS3 only does software PS2 emulation on the 60 and 80GB ones but if you get an older PS3, like around when they first came out, they have all of the essential PS2 hardware onboard and I think it supposedly gives you about 95% backwards compatability.

Also, you may even consider getting a faster PS2 hard drive if you want to knock 2 seconds off your loading time and 10 off your install time, or just to gloat about the fact that you have a 7200RPM PS2.

I'm definately gonna do that if I ever get a PS3.
