Homophobe.

Dunno, just the idea of becoming a superhero in the DC Universe sounds fucking awesome.

LoTR: Online is far from the 'cool' version of WoW . From my experiences of LoTR: Online, the community prides itself on not being the typical 14-year old ganking WoW player. This elitism is fine by me though, I don't miss the LoTR community when I play World of Warcraft... they're the sort of people that camp Ironforge on Role-Playing servers anyway. Haha.

Mutant: The 'free month' is what you receive whenever you create your WoW account. You're elligible to create one account with every CD-Key that you get- so technically yes the Battle-Keep will get you a first month free. It's part of the package of creating an account and registering up all of your credit card info.

COH: Old, dead, nothing especial from any other MMO you'll find out there nowadays.

It was good in its day though!

Seriously all of these alternatives look good but really the best bet for an MMO is WoW, Everquest II (hardcore PvE) or EVE (hardcore doing nothing).

They're your best three choices, trust me I've tried them all.

Pretty much. But DC Universe is on PS3-only, which makes me kind of sketchy.

FFXI was nice.

Everyone playing is so nice, and will help you with anything. Graphics suck a bit, but it's been going a while and is well thought out.

I'd still be playing it if I had the time for it...

FFXI was damn expensive, I think that's why it flopped in such an epic way in the mainstream market

MMO's do really cater for a lot of nichés Mutant, that's what you have to remember when making your choice: there's the 'casual' free MMO's for people that don't want to pay or glue themselves into hard-play; there's the 'perfect balance' of PvP/PvE/RP MMO's like World of Warcraft that seem to cater for every MMO's players needs; there's the PvE-intensive MMO's that involve lots of leveling, lots of of raiding etc. such as Everquest II; there's the PvP-intensive MMO's that focus more on the player-killing-playing aspect-- good examples are Age of Conan and the upcoming WAR. If you're into comics and superheroes go for City of Heroes. If you're into the Final Fantasy universe and aesthetic style, go for FFXI. Similarly if the Blzizard franchise and Warcraft RTS games hooked you, WoW is the obvious choice. If you're a lover of Tolkein and his works then perhaps you'd have more fun in Lord of the Rings Online. Choosing an MMO isn't all about the technical-side of it, sometimes you can't make a decision based on the MMO's merits-- sometimes you've got to choose just based on the style and setting that you'd be happy immersing yourself in for 100's of hours.

I will still reiterate my original 3 'best' recommendations of the modern-day genre: all-round for WoW, PvE for Everquest II, and the whole all-enveloping community/economics/building something progressively goes down to EVE Online. 3 rather drastically different games, but they're the 'best of' the genre respectively. Remember what I said about just going with the theme/style that suits you though... for instance, EVE is a fantastic game but I cannot stand playing it because I find nothing engaging or 'fun' about floating around vast expanses of nothingness, shooting lasers at enemies in the distance that are tiny specks.
