Yeah, me too, probably because it doesnt involve Iran, that said. This is rather odd, they seem to be calling for peace, but working in the opposite direction. Also the call for US intervention worrys me(least it seems the Georgians are calling for intervention). Not to mention that the Russians are playing this off as a Georgian attack. I dont like this.

While I am not thinking clearly at this moment, I am going to take a guess that your are referring to the vast different sizes comparing the military's of the two countries, and that is why they are calling for help.

Exactly. Georgia is Mexico, obviously.

Maybe it's the name of the thread, I already saw one duplicate.

The US will probably offer mediation and talks. I can't see them going to war with Russia over this. Some guy in the Pentagon will have run this scenario and whilst the Georgians say it's in the US's interest to help, I don't think it is. It might improve the international image because they'd be sticking up for essentially the little bullied kid against a proper military. That's not worth WW3.

sadly, there is little interest in this right now unless you live in the region... that being said, i've personally always been interested in the russian post-cold war development, and find this war extremely disturbing.  this is one of those situations that will become a stalemate much like the palenstinian/isreal conflict, with neither side willing to concede.  all the while, innocent civilians will be killed and displaced, because of the usual fights over where a proverbial line is drawn on a map.

what i do like to see, however disturbing it may be, are the tactics and weapons deployed by the russians against a force they should not have much difficulty with.  i've already seen the reports of the russian planes that were shot down, but can't seem to find the model.  i wonder if it was a modern era mig or su series?

TSKHINVALI, Georgia - A Cabinet minister says Georgian troops control the capital of the breakaway province of South Ossetia.

Georgian troops launched a major military offensive earlier Friday to regain control of South Ossetia, prompting a furious response from Russia.

Russia has sent tanks into the region and the convoy is expected to reach the provincial capital by evening.

The fighting is the worst outbreak of hostilities since the province won de-facto independence in a war that ended in 1992 — raising fears that war could once again erupt.

Well this move could set the precedence for all Russia actions in the future. What many people are failing to realise is that the sleeping bear has re-awoken and is ready for a fight. I personally have no problem with Russia defending its borders like that because we all know that our countries would do the same.
Why doesn't Europe do something about Russia?  Hell, quit being such tools.  Mobalise the Irelanian Militia, activate the Swedish Bikini Team, Call out the Dutch guys that wear the fury hats.......

Yeah I dont see much coming out of this, just Im worried about how the Russians are playing this off as a virtual attack against themselves. Now unless a bunch of very powerful people do a bunch of extremely major fuck ups. Another thing is that the Russian military is, or at least seems to be already in Georgia.

Im reading reports that the Russian 58th Army is outside the capital. Now it is impossible to move an entire Army into another country on this short of a notice. Also, heres a quote from a Georgian official:

Saakashvili, who insists his government’s military action was provoked, noted the timing in an interview with CNN. “Most decision makers have gone for the holidays,” he said. “Brilliant moment to attack a small country.”

That is from this story: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26080747/

i really try not to believe everything the media puts out there, but i'm sure both sides were preparing for this.  but im certain georgia could have provoked this.  i've seen stories about how the georgian president was elected on the promise of re-uniting with the ossetian province.  i doubt it is coincidence russia decided to just attack georgia.  keep in mind georgia is a US ally, so you get the pro-georgia media spin.

Another quote, and this is what I was worrying about.

Saakashvili said the Russian invasion of South Ossetia was pre-planned.

"These troops that are in Georgia now -- they didn't come unexpectedly," the president told CNN. "They had been amassing at the border for the last few months. They claimed they were staging exercises there and as soon as a suitable pretext was found, they moved in."

hmmmm, what was the pretext?

possibly a georgian incursion in southern ossetia?  a shootdown of regular russian overflights?  i just find it hard to believe this was without georgian provacation.

Russia said a Georgian attack on a military barracks left a number of Russian peacekeepers dead.
Now why would the Georgians attack a military barracks housing Russians?

I admit it is possible we are being played by the Georgians, though they are taking a gamble with their entire country, so I dont find it likely.

yeah but look at this story... http://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/17 … p;psp=news

it just says georgia launched a major offensive with shelling ossetia and shooting down russian fighters.

a civilian in ossetia says they started attacking her village.  strange response to a russian attack don't you think?

But where is the point on provoking Russia without having no one backing them, how can they be sure the US, NATO whatever will help them..

But thats the problem, the Russians, hell, no one can move that many troops into another country that fast.

Where were those planes flying? The Georgians are saying they shot down 4 Russians planes that were attacking them. But again, I still wanna know how the Russians got an Army Group, thats 10s of 1,000s, possibly over 100,000 men and equipment into Georgia in such short notice.

Not to mention this is gnawing at my consciousness as well:

Whoops. My point still stands, though not as high. It is possible to get leading elements there that quick. If the Georgians actually did provoke this, then they deserve what ever they got coming. Feel sorry for the common folk though.

i totally agree that the common folk really are getting shit on again.

on a side note, i really am interested in the weapons that are being deployed on both sides... has anyone seen technical references to the tanks or aircraft being used?  i just want an idea of how badly the georgian army is going to get kicked.

I spied Su25's or 39's and T-72's that looked like they were with the Russians, also Land Rovers, which I didn't think the Russian's used.

Weird, got this from wiki, apparently there have been Cyber attacks taking place

Wiki wrote:

South Ossetian officials stated that two Ossetian news media sites were hacked. Dmitry Medoev, the South Ossetian secessionist envoy in Moscow, claimed that Georgia was trying to cover up reports of deaths.
