tbh, if you are getting a Golf get a newer one, which is about 5-6k and that's out of his budget. That Alfa looks quite nice from the inside ... I assume you've checked on autotrader?Airwolf wrote:
VW. Do it.
From experience, they have a solid build and handle brilliantly.

yeah, looked on autotrader, nearest Golf R32 is £9k.kylef wrote:

There are good GTi ones going for £3 - 4k
My friend had a 106 rallye. Was a great wee car. Superb handling and pretty rapid. Got a normal 106 myself and it isn't great tbh, does the job though.Bertster7 wrote:
I have a 106 at the moment that I've borrowed from work. They are hateful, hateful cars - like all French cars. They handle badly, go slowly and most importantly are unpleasant to drive - mostly due to poor design, like having all the pedals too close together and a rubbish gearstick.SamTheMan:D wrote:

Heh, that's why I said, "I doubt they're available in England."aerodynamic wrote:
You can't drive a chevroleth caprice in england, better in any other places than europe.FrankieSpankie3388 wrote:
I doubt they are available in England and they aren't the best on gasoline, but I'll still suggest it. I suggest a 95 or 96 Chevrolet Caprice, preferably 96. 95 is notorious for having rear end issues......
Europes cities are not suited for cars like a chevrolet caprice, do you have any idea how small are the streetsi n the center of Rome, London, Paris and in any other cities? and lets not forget about parking. Europe is for cars like Smart (I hate it tho), Alfa 146, Fiat 500, Peugoet 306, Toyota yaris or aygo.
Small cars easy to park, easy to drive in cities.
Back on topic, great choice, how much are you going to pay for it?
Dont seem bad at all, only problem is the steering well is not at the good place!
Does the UK have any equivalent for the Kelley Blue Book?
I can't just suggest a car for you outta the blue though. Information like how much you use it, space desired, what kind of layout you want, etc. would be helpful.

Agreed the US uses the wrong side of the car for steering wheel placement. Also whats the oldest year you would go for?Bertster7 wrote:

I think this thread has only one real answer.
Get an 3rd Gen Eclipse
But make sure you get the 4 cylinder one, if your are in to forced induction.

Go old school, like an old jag or mini or something. There always great fun, and a drive to work is never the same twice!
156 is nice, but i dont know why, there are some ugly ones and some good looking ones
Alfa will break down. At least it looks good stationary at the side of the road.
I had a Pug 306 for 5 years. Never had major probs, and handled really well. Cant speak for the 106 though.
I would look at the Pug 306, 407, ( avoid 307), some kind of Golf. If you value reliability you cant go past Corolla, Civic, Mazda 3/323 etc.

I'd advice basically any VW you can get for that money, but mostly the VW Golf IV.
If I were to get a Golf, which I probably wouldn't because I like my cars to be a little longer than that (I had a Polo for a while, that was quite nice, but not really fun), I'd get a GTi, which would be out of my budget for anything decent. I can't really afford a GTA either, although I was looking at a couple of the 2.5 V6 156s, because it's a really lovely engine - though all the twin sparks, before they switched to JTS and started using modded Saab engines, are really lovely.TheEternalPessimist wrote:
If you want a 156 try find a 156GTA (you're lookin at 8k for one of those though), other than that I can only reccomend a Golf GTi (or the R32 above but I cant see you finding that for £3k).
EDIT: Or you could get a good 206 GTi or CC, I love my 206 to bits.
Why? Because you'll always break down in a different spot?Mongoose wrote:

Not a bad idea. I quite like Eclipses... Maybe next time.
None of my other Alfas have ever broken down (barring numerous minor electrical faults (which I can easily repair myself)). They always been perfect to drive. Not even a hint of any mechanical faults.Burwhale the Avenger wrote:

Anyway, I've seen it and put a deposit on it. I'm going to collect it at the weekend and then I'll be back to driving around in a lovely Alfa, not a horrible 106 Diesel. Thanks for the replies, many of the earlier ones especially (the ones I'd read buy the time I bought it), which did help me decide.
Get an old a4 rather than the alfa.

Good luck with the new car. Alfas do make fun cars, and it sounds like you know how to deal with them.
First and foremost I loved the adjective dozy cow haven't heard that in years.
Secondly the car Hondas and VW are freakin reliable and run on the smell of an oil rag, as noted above. Spare parts are also quite cheap.
Peugot are also worth a mention.
Jaguars old ones too keep within ya 3000 budget look classy and run nice.
If all else fails a 70s ford escort. Although fall under the catagory of owned lots of shit cars previously.
Tough chocie glad its you not me.
