on the negative: Is there any punishment severe enough for this child's birth mother? I cannot think of retribution worthy of the crime she committed.

Yeah that still happens. I remember hearing about some parents stuffing their girl in a closet for her life. When police found here she couldn't speak.

This made scientists understand that the brain brutally cuts off un-used functions that its capable of, in this case, speech.

Seriously, WTF is wrong with our "justice system" when a "parent" (I don't think the mother should qualify, but I dont' know the right term...monster perhaps...) can get off with probation. That isn't just neglect, that is attempted murder, IMO. I can't comprehend how any "parent" could competely disregard the life of their child--parental duty is right up there with pure survival in terms of human priorities, sometimes even beyond personal survival.
I am amazed that no one involved beat the crap out of her...seriously, just reading that made me furious...I'm not sure I could restrain myself in such a situation.

That isn't enough. I normally wouldn't say that somebody doesn't deserve life, but that mother doesn't. She deserves to be tortured and killed in the worst, unimaginable way possible.
