Hey all,

This is yet another CTD thread .  Here are my specs:

Intel DP35DP mainboard
Core 2 Duo 2.66GHz
2 GB DDR2 800MHz RAM
ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT, 512 MB VRAM
SB Audigy 2
Win XP Home SP2

Temperatures are good.  Under full load, I see 53C max for the processor.  50C max for the mainboard's sensors, about 10-20C higher for the ICH/MCH but Intel says that's normal, even not under load.  43C max for the GPU.  Hard drive stays between 34C-36C all the time, doesn't look like gaming has any effect on its temperature either.

My 380W Antec Earthwatts PSU remains constant and spot-on with the voltages, just a little high for the 12V, a little high for the 5V, and a little high for the 3.3V, and then "unknown voltage" as it appears in my monitoring software is always at 1.25.  Processor Vccp never goes up past 1.25 during gaming (although it does during video encoding and whatnot, so I know it's getting plenty of power).

Everything has the latest drivers/BIOS, Memtested, Prime95ed, PerformanceTested and 3DMark'd, also been playing BF2 and more intense games on it with no issues for a long time.  I have also attempted a clean install to no avail.

Then I started having problems with BF2.  I recently updated PB manually because I was getting kicked from servers.  To be honest I didn't play a lot right before I updated because I was getting kicked, but ever since I updated I've been getting an unusual assortment of problems:

- When I get close to vehicles or in-place rocket tubes, their textures turn a fuzzy black and white, like snow, and are animated across the whole vehicle as it moves.

- When I zoom in on guns that overlay the sights as a texture (e.g., not the SA80 or SRAW, but M16, G36, etc.), that texture is entirely black and my whole screen turns black as a result--I can't see through the scope, except for a little light that is my muzzle flash.

- When I shoot, I can not hear the sound of my own gun--I used to be able to just fine.  It makes me more accurate because it's less distracting , but I can't tell when I'm out of ammo during a close-quarters spray.

- When I pull up the commo rose or any other text other than the in-game text, instead of letters there are various-sized blocks for each letter.

- The text in buttons on the various menus seems to be rendered off-center on some buttons.

- Sometimes the game fails to load despite my desktop resolution/refresh rate matching my BF2 res/refresh rate (1280x1024@60Hz).  I see the splash screen, it checks for the CD, the screen goes black, and then it comes back to desktop.  When running in windowed mode I get some sort of weird abort/retry/cancel "Debug Assertion Failed!  blah blah blah D.../Aphrodite/RendDX9Init.cpp" and the window closes before the intro movies/menu comes up.  Only a restart can fix this problem.

And the big one once I'm in-game:

It crashes randomly.  Sometimes (probably most of the time) when there's no action.  Sometimes just after a match.  Sometimes after a previous crash when I'm trying to join a server.  I'll just go straight back to desktop, no error from Windows, BF2 or anything.  When I crash, my graphics settings for my desktop have changed.  4-bit color, 640x480.  But luckily the icons all remain in place when I manually switch back under the Properties menu of my desktop.

Here's what my textures look like:

This never happened before on my setup.  All my parts are fairly new and all the other games I play work fine, including BF2 up until this point, which makes me think it's a software rather than a hardware problem.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Much obliged,
- Steve.

Hello, and welcome to the forums

The texture issues that you see is called "artifacting", and is more often than not related to either your video drivers, or your graphics card overheating. Since you say there is nothing wrong with your temperatures, then try updating / reinstalling your video card drivers.

However, the cause of the rest of your problems are certainly not related to your video card- You mention that you have done "a clean install", but im unsure if you are referencing BF2 or Windows itself. If you were talking about BF2, then did you carry out a manual reinstall (including deleting all the registry keys), or just using the uninstall wizard?. The difference between a manual uninstall and just using the uninstall wizard is that the uninstall wizard leaves a lot of files on your system-> so if it is one of the these files that is the source of your problems, it will never get removed!

If you havent carried out a manual uninstall of BF2 before, I would put the cause to your other problems down to a corrupt install, or a bad application of a patch.

To fix these issues I would try the following:

1) Delete the "Battlefield 2" folder in My documents-> This make the game redetect all settings and your PC environment the next time it is loaded.
2) Try reapplying the latest 1.41 patch.

See if your problem is now fixed, if you are still having issues, then I would next try a manual uninstall of the game-> steps to do this can be found here

Hope it helps

Many thanks for the reply, Titch.

I meant manual install of BF2 by "clean install."

In my latest of these manual installs, I reinstalled, applied the patch, but the game still says version 1.1 in it.  Okay, no big deal, I know I applied the patch, so I uncheck "same version" in multiplayer and join a server, and everything is fine.  I can load maps and play games.  Then PB kicked me for no packet flow.

I manually update Punkbuster and try the game again.

Now I start getting the crash to desktops--splash screen, then crash.  What the hell.

I look in my dxdiag and notice that my video card has somehow lost Direct3D functionality, wtf.  So to make doubly sure that this is the case I run one of the 3D games I wrote back in my golden age, and sure enough that crashes too.  My video card suddenly does not support Direct3D.

So I restart and my video card has D3D functionality back again, hallelujah.  I start BF2.  Join a server.  Play two matches, and at the end of the second match, crash, to desktop, no error.

The only signs that something went wrong in the mix was that my desktop resolution was set to 640x480 with 4-bit graphics, as usual.

I am not about to try BF2 again because I bet it will make me lose my D3D functionality (AGAIN) and require a restart.

Again, your reply was much appreciated, Titch.  It's a lot more human than the canned-response copy-and-paste crap I'm getting from EA.

Pissed,
Steve.
