And I've been looking at the Canon EOS 450D. Any good?

Also, I always thought you could manually focus instead of using auto-focus, but I couldn't find the feature when testing in the store. How does one do this?

The 450D should be frigging awesome. I've got an Eos 300 myself (the old-school-non-digital-all-film-model), and it rocks. If I only had a darkroom.. And time..

Anyway, on the ol' Eos 300, the lenses had a switch on the side with "AF" and "MF". You do the math.

Edit: Yep, there it is, on an EF-lense

450D should be great

friend had an 400D, it rocked....

so IF you got the money (which you need by lots ) go for it.

I think with SLR, Canon is the way.

You can't go wrong with a Canon or Nikon DSLR.

I have a Canon EOS 400D and imho you don't need the features of a 450D. Save the money for some good objectives. Get a 400D with the 18-55 mm lens kit, it rocks. Or if you have the money, get a 40D. Semi-prof DSLR camera. But very expensive.

two of my favorite pictures

It all comes down to personal preference. In general if you like lots of auto features then get a Canon. If you like more control get a Nikon.

Deffo, I have quite a few Canon SLR's in my household - and they are excellent.
Get it Jenspm!

(Or a 350D if you just want to play)

Of course if you want real quality, you could get a normal camera and use 6x9 film which is way higher quality than any digital camera (you can usually get 4800dpi prints@48-bit/channel colour).

The best description I've heard comparing the top two companies:
"Canon cameras are designed by engineers, Nikon cameras are designed by photographers."
Most sports photographers tend to go with Canon, but as a paintball photographer, I'm doing fine with my Nikon D80.

Whatever you do, do a lot of research before buying one.

Edit: My Nikon has an auto and manual focus switch on the body of the camera.
