So I got my new card recently 8800GTS step up from my old 7800GT...  and I can get really high settings on 2142, the only thing it wont let me do is 8x AA

Heres the problem: I'm in my video settings and I slide it to 8x AA from 4x AA and it says, "The changes will take effect after the game is restarted"so I restart the game, and it still says 4X AA, I slide it to 8x AA and it says something about the shaders needing to be optimized upon the next map load and the game will start then... But next time I load a map it doesn't optimize and I look and I'm still at 4x...

Specs:  AMD AM2 Athlon 6000+ @ 3.0GHz
4GB RAM
8800GTS (G92) 512MB
Vista Ultimate x64

close the game with 4x, change to 8x, restart game, go go go

Everything maxed as far as it goes, 1680x1050, 8xAA, 100fps steady.

Yay.

well, my video card i dying anyway - think I let her overheat in the few days of summer we had and now she freezes the game up to 10 secs randomly... time to spend some of that money!

Can't you force it to 8 or 16 X AA via the nvidia control panel?

Doesn't work for me.  It goes back to 4x.  I tried editing config files but the game wouldn't start when I set it to 8x.

I take that back.  I just edited the config file and it worked this time.  To do it, go to:

My Documents->Battlefield 2142->Profiles->0001->Video.CON

The file should say something like:

VideoSettings.setTerrainQuality 3
VideoSettings.setGeometryQuality 3
VideoSettings.setLightingQuality 3
VideoSettings.setDynamicLightingQuality 3
VideoSettings.setDynamicShadowsQuality 3
VideoSettings.setEffectsQuality 3
VideoSettings.setTextureQuality 3
VideoSettings.setTextureFilteringQuality 3
VideoSettings.setResolution 1024x768@60Hz
VideoSettings.setAntialiasing 4Samples
VideoSettings.setViewDistanceScale 1
VideoSettings.setUseBloom 1
VideoSettings.setVideoOptionScheme 3

Change the part that says:

VideoSettings.setAntialiasing 4Samples

to:

VideoSettings.setAntialiasing 8Samples

so you get:

VideoSettings.setTerrainQuality 3
VideoSettings.setGeometryQuality 3
VideoSettings.setLightingQuality 3
VideoSettings.setDynamicLightingQuality 3
VideoSettings.setDynamicShadowsQuality 3
VideoSettings.setEffectsQuality 3
VideoSettings.setTextureQuality 3
VideoSettings.setTextureFilteringQuality 3
VideoSettings.setResolution 1024x768@60Hz
VideoSettings.setAntialiasing 8Samples
VideoSettings.setViewDistanceScale 1
VideoSettings.setUseBloom 1
VideoSettings.setVideoOptionScheme 3

The game launched for me and it says 8x in the options menu.  I didn't load a server though, so I'm not sure if that will work.

EDIT2:  And before anybody comments on the resolution, I force the game into 1440x900 using the +szx 1440 +szy 900.  I know the game now supports widescreen resolutions if you put the +widescreen, but when I tried that, all the 3D map icons were huge and distracting.  Forcing the game to do that resolution makes them smaller and easier to play.
