The only real tools you need are the BIOS, which you already have, and some know-how, which you can get here:

http://www.overclock.net/

Also check your motherboard maker's site for a forum. Talking with people who have similar hardware as you can help a lot with how much(or how little) of an overclock you can squeeze out of your rig.

Simply boot into your bios by pressing some key that should be shown when you start your computer. Some where in your bois you will find something like FSB speed. Default should be 200, you have to increase that to increase your processor speed. Each Mhz of you FSB you increase is multiplied by your cpu multiplier which should be 12. So each FSB Mhz you increase is 12Mhz to your processor.

Also if you have a DELL, HP, IBM, Gateway etc..... you wont be able to OC you processor because those companies disables that feature on your motherboard

Also, check out your cooling potientials... even if you overclock like crazy, your computer will choke with heat and cause your compy to go fried... not good. Check if your computer can handle the oc and get proper cooling.

overheating is not really a issue with overclocking unless you really want to push your limits and for your link at http://eatypo.ytmnd.com    for the people that played with you on bf2    we allready know you like the cock!!

I'd like to add something, when you overclock you obviously pick the % you want to overclock, what is everyones preference here. (lets call it an unofficial poll within josh's thread, if he doesnt mind)

"what does johnson say about overclocking and cooling well as long as its big its good"  ... as long as you dont overclock like a mad man there is no need for upgrading your cooling your 3400+ will reach 3.6 on stock cooling you just need to find the right range with it not going to far to the over heating point. and most of the times your motherboard manufactuer will have some kind of overclocking tool in the software for this purpose.

I overclocked my 3200+ on a Asus AV8 with 1 gig of ram. I had it set at about 5 to 15% depending on what I was doing be video editing or gaming.

Nvidia has a tool (It's terrible though).

Again, only way to do it is threw BIOS.  Do ALOT of reading up first.  It's not hard to burn up a cpu if you do not know what you are doing.  Been overclocking for years now.  It does have it's advantages.

If you can afford to replace stuff go for it.  If you can't, leave it alone.

Easy overclock for Nvidia cards is "Coolbits".  Just google it.  Just merge it into you registery, goto control panel/display/settings/advanced/ click you card, clock freqencies.  And set to auto detect.  Very easy.

Good luck

Enter your BIOS at start up by pressing the proper key. Which key that is will depend on your motherboard maker.

Download and run CPU-Z. Go to the Mainboard tab and that'll tell you the make and model of your motherboard. Then do a Google for "entering *insert model number* bios".

CPU-Z is also a very useful tool while youre overclocking. It will show you the clock speed of your cpu (as someone mentioned, its just the FSB x multiplier, but its nice to see it all laid out for you.) and the frequency of your ram. You can get very good advice about overclocking at most overclocking dedicated websites. A few that come to mind are www.ocforums.com and http://www.overclockers.com/ .

I wrote an overclocking guide as well, simply because I'm such a cool and lovable guy. However, you probably want to get your advice from people more experience than myself. If you really want to follow my advice you can find it here: http://forums.bf2s.com/viewtopic.php?id=12531.

That guide is based on my personal experience with overclocking, and the temperature guidelines I mentioned are for AMD chips. Intel chips typically run hotter. If nothing else, the tools I mentioned are very handy for testing the speeds and stability of your system, and I provided a download link for all of them. (I think)

I'd feel better if an expert looked at my writing. *wink wink* assasin.

Welp Im what you would call an Overclocker. Ok, The 3400+ If its a Newcastle core would have a divider of Probably 10 (My 3700+ Dieago has 11. Overclocking isnt just about Raising the FSB, Its Much more than that. He needs to first Drop his memory Down to 333Mhz.  Now depending on his Motherboard, he also needs to Change his HTT Multiplier down to 3X If not he could Burn his Processor out.  I would Raise the FSB(should be at 200) Up in incriments of 5-10 Mhz at a time, and then run 3dmark05 In a loop for atleast an hour. If all goes well, Raise your FSB a bit more, Then test again. I would say, to be safe Id Put your FSB to 240Mhz and then Get a program called Prime95 and run the torture test for ATLEAST 9 hours straight, If you run it without errors, your good to go.

I wouldnt Worry about heat, Im at 2.7 and Im at 28C on air, so i wouldnt even worry about heat unless your going to go WAY above that. If you do go above that, you will probably need to raise the Voltage of the processor to 1.5 volts and that will increse the heat a bit.

For further info, Refere to the Forums @ www.overclockers.com  In the CPU section Under AMD  CPU's.

Good luck and happy overclocking.

lol, i really cbf writing one of those guides lol, but yea, thats correct

dont forget, after overclocking, u hav to stress test it too to test stability under load

used a proggy like SP2004 (Stress Prime2004) or Prime95

Run it under high priority for at least 12 hours straight without doing anything else, if it comes up with errors, then its not stable, so go back to the drawing board.

Don't forget about cooling, if you don't want to spend money or time on water i recommend a good heatsink like the coolermaster hyper 6+ it fits with every socket type and is one of the best on the market
