Iran test-fired more long-range missiles overnight in a second round of exercises meant to show that the country can defend itself against any attack by the U.S. or Israel, state television reported Thursday.

The weapons have "special capabilities" and included missiles launched from naval ships in the Persian Gulf, along with torpedoes and surface-to-surface missiles, the broadcast said. It did not elaborate.

...

The report came hours after Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice warned Iran that Washington will not back down in the face of threats against Israel.

"We are sending a message to Iran that we will defend American interests and the interests of our allies," Rice said Thursday in Georgia at the close of a three-day Eastern European trip.

Yes, every country can test it's weapons, there's nothing wrong with that.  It just starts to get a little wrong when you happen to fire them into the narrowest part of the Gulf, where 40% of the world's oil passes through.

Heard some Israeli minister say something to the effect lately "we will turn Iran into a radioactive desert. They are not that stupid."*grin*

Suppose when they get their nukes on those missile "we will turn Israel into a radioactive desert. They are not that stupid."*grin*

Hence Mutually Assured Destruction. The USA and USSR proved it works and were/are great advocates of the system.................when it suits them.

With this sabre rattling creeping up as the election draws near, I'm really quite worried that neither of the candidates (lets face it, there's only two) fits the bill of what is needed to get out of this rut we're in. IMO Barack has a good plan in which he encourages diplomacy with all countries like Iran, but I disagree with many of his domestic policies. I also several of McCain's plans for America, but am not very confident in his foreign policy way that seems a bit too uncompromising. The U.S. probably could have stopped this as well if they just said "enough" to Israel so that they can't have any attacks without fear of reprisal (and thus, probably will stop aggression) but will may also prevent these countries that aren't too friendly to drop it.

Two Party System sucks, I have to say.

Here, the Liberal Democrat party (3rd largest UK party) would provide the policies you seek. The domestic properties of McCain with the foreign policies of Obhama. They usually go down the middle. They wouldn't actually get elected, but would steel enough seats and power from the election to either block the future policies you are concerned about and/or scare the two main parties into 'toning down' there own domestic and foreign policies. That's where UK democracy raises above that of the USA.

The two parties in the US are not static in their positions. I think the majority of us (reality based thinkers) are leaning toward this type of political philosophy.

All of this started when Israel's deputy PM Shaul Mofaz said last month that striking Iran was "unavoidable". How exactly do you expect Iran to react? Should they be painting bullseyes on the tops of their buildings instead?

When you openly threaten to pre-emptively attack a country, then when they say or do anything in response, you can hardly take that as evidence of ill intentions. America and Israel are the ones with ill intentions.

Also Israel mounts a military exercise which could be a dry run for an attack on iran, and that's o.k.

the U.S mounts military exercises in the area, obviously flexing their muscles at Iran, and thats o.k.

Iran mounts military exercises WITHIN their own borders effectively showing their possible response to the current aggression, and that´s bad.

the level of hypocrisy at the moment beggars belief. and current policy does nothing at all for regional stability

On Wednesday, prices had seesawed before settling a penny higher at $136.05, ending two days of sharp declines that left prices 6.4 percent below last Thursday's record trading high of $145.85 a barrel.

Iran is gay on Islam, thus they are completely peaceful and there is nothing to fear.  Unlike those violent catholic bastards in Ireland, remember the crusades?  I bet the those warring catholics get drunk and fire bottle rockets toward london all the time.

How are they your ally?  Are they helping in Iraq or Afghanistan?  I know they cannot send soldiers but at least are they helping by sending money? Or maybe asking for less money?
