Well as opposed to the audiophile-esque alternative of carrying around a vinyl-player... no thanks.Defiance wrote:
Uh, get another player if you want and can.
I'd suggest a decent player though, you can't call yourself an audiophile and carry around an iTouch.
And it was a 5th generation iPod Video, not one of those gimmicky iTouch contraptions- they're definitely not for me! I only chose my old companion because of its storage space-- iPods are generally always 'ahead of the curve' in terms of mass storage, and that's primarily what I need when I'm on the move; a vast selection of artists and albums to choose from! Plus, it goes without saying that my entire predicament is chiefly financial... so a 'decent' player is more than stretching the pockets at the moment .
Sorry if the image I used was misleading-- as j5689 pointed out it was just a 'My iPod is Dead!' image, more than an actual symptom. That error image is shown when the iPod firmware is corrupted I believe, whereas my LCD screen is irrepairably cracked. If only it was as simple to fix as banging on a table! Nothing for it except replacement, or the previously suggested solution of becoming an hero- which I must say at this moment is looking very attractive.

Yeah they suck a little, quality wise.
That was really poetic for someone's iPod dying. I would have just said "My fucken ipod just broke. Help plx?"
I know, it was 2:30am and I was rather tired... a sort of way of amusing myself rather than getting very annoyed and angry .PspRpg-7 wrote:

eBay does have some startlingly-cheap iPod's for 'sale' via eBay Shops. So cheap in fact that some of the auctions are downright dubious.
Still, desperate times lead to desparate measures... may have to take the plunge with one of these so-called 'bombay25126152' sellers. I'm always a little cautious when it comes to eBay because I'm aware of the consumer protection and buyer rights/laws available to a bidder under UK legislation and law. It's very easy to get burnt out of pocket over eBay and often receive no compensation or damages...
Oh and Zimmer, thanks for the complimentary 'Anti-Apple / Anti-iPod' post- this thread was getting dangerously long and dangerously below-quota on those . What else do you propose that offers good quality (read: decent enough for the discerning 320kbps / FLAC listener*) that has the basic necessities of a modern-day MP3/MP4 player? Bearing in mind I have a library that is well over 300Gb the last time I checked, and as such the overall storage is a big selling point for me. Oh and spare the Zen / Zune recommendations... have tried them both, found them unsatisfactory.
*Yes, I'm aware of the audio compression and formatting that occurs with iPods, but I still generally find the quality to be satisfactory at decent volumes, even when put under the scrutiny of high-quality earphones.

That's the best part. You get a dud, and it is either still in warranty and you replace, or it doesn't work but you haven't lost much cause it was cheap, or it works fine and is a good replacement to what you were after.Uzique wrote:

Well, for example the 80Gb Classics retail in the UK for around £150.00, and they're on eBay from these mysterious factory-sellers for £115.00. It's considerably cheaper (next to no markup at all I imagine)- yet over a hundred quid is still a nasty hit to take if all you get for it is effectively a non-guaranteed paperweight .TheAussieReaper wrote:

Well I bought mine from ebay, at a cheaper than retail price. It's been great to me and I'm really happy with it. Make sure you check the sellers feedback and if it looks good you should be fine.
My iPod Mini died on me once, very annoying but Apple replaced it quickly! My current 30GB iPod has been going for a long time now. I got it that christmas the year it was released.
Yep, as mentioned in my original post, mine was literally brand new off the shelves after they launched the Videos...kylef wrote:

Has lived a surprising long life; I use it everyday for at least an hour, and the lithium battery is still going strong where my friend's iPods croaked it years ago (we all bought them aroundabout the same time, in consumerist fanboy glee)- so I'm overall quite impressed that it has lasted through 3 years of everyday usage (and occasional droppage too :p)
Shame the hallowed warranty probably expired about 2 years ago now! Haha.

Uzique : iRiver L player
Supports FLAC fully and is an awesome little player. Problem is it only has a capacity of 8GB.
Although, saying that, my music folder is over 500GB and I manage perfectly with an 8GB Samsung touch. So maybe you should try it; because right now you aren't going to get a larger and better MP3 player than that.

There's no way I could last on 8GB!Zimmer wrote:

A. Because you don't have time to listen to all your music when you are out.
B. Because you get back home and you can change the music on your MP3 without much fuss.
C. Because you never want to listen to every single song on yur MP3 if you have 300GB of shit stored on it.
D. Again, because with time, it's impossible.
If that is too small, then take a look at the Archos 605 WiFi player. It's pretty damn sleek and you can get one that has a capacity of 160GB.
Archos 605
iRiver's are definitely nice Zimmer, but I don't see how you cope on 8Gb! .
Even if I pick the 'best of' each genre that I'm interested in - especially in FLAC quality - it well exceeds 50Gb, let alone 8Gb!
The major grievance that I had with my now-deceased iPod was that it was 30Gb of storage, which was alright back in the day when my collection was small... but later became a large annoyance and a daily chore having to click and drag the music I wanted onto my 'iPod Selection' Playlist. Of course, a small setback in comparison to a broken screen but alas- everyone can have their gripes!

Gotta say, I fell to sleep watching a video on my iTouch, and reading this thread I'm glad it survived, I was just going to drain the battery complete before recharging it (It's rather new, and I like to completely drain the batteries before recharging the first few times even if it's Li-Ion) but I was so tired that I fell asleep. Maybe it helped that I had a protective casing around it. That iPod cost me $770, would have been over $1000 if I bought it here in Iceland, but I got it in Denmark. Cost me a whole week's salary of my summer job

Yep, the first thing I looked into was replacement/repair, yet the cost of the repair service is the same as the overall value of the early-5th gen iPods - around £90.00.
So today I drove into town and picked up a sexy new 160Gb 5.5th gen .
And now I must carry my new love over the threshold and break her in with a long hard night...
... of laboriously searching the Internet for album artwork.
(Anyone know any cool software utilities that makes this task easier? The new iPods' attention to album artwork is rather fetching, but iTunes has a pathetic range of automatically-found artwork. Much Karmaz for help!)

It's colorless so it the screen is like a calculator screen with a backlight.
