tbh, Smart ForTwo electrical is the best

- can do 70mph (motorway national speed limit)
- 0-30 at 6.5s but the acceleration is really fast (I know, I'm in one every day)
- no congestion charge cost
- zero emissions for all the scared people

The only problem I see is that it can only do 70. Motorway traffic here tends to head up to about 80, and on times on a clear road we're doing 95 in the normal Smart ForTwo - but nonetheless, such a cool car.

What about family cars? If your gonna pile 4 or 5 people in a car for a trip to the beach, you cant use a Prius. Chrysler and Doge are each putting out hybrid SUV's, Dodge Durango boosts 25% more fuel efficiency. So in other words, it went from 16mpg highway to 20mpg highway, for an extra 15 grand.

Family's cant be buying 3 different cars for commuting and travel.

I would also say a reason many of those cars aren't offered in the US is because most of them were diesel.  The US has much tighter restrictions on emissions from diesel engines.

As I own one of said car's I'm inclined to agree, although the price of Diesel is kinda killing off a chunk of the benefit of lower runnings costs, it does go for much longer than it's petrol equivelant.

Mine's rated for almost 65MPG (highway) and it's a 9 year old engine, newer ones manage a fuck load more, plus mines a 1.9, a 1.4/1.6 would go even further.

As I stated before there hasn't been a market for them. It's not a "doing something wrong" problem, it was a demand problem. Europeans have always paid much more in fuel.. that is why you had a greater incentive for consumers to purchase energy efficient cars. This in turn gave auto manufactures a reason to market and develop said vehicles.

30 mpg is energy efficient for an SUV. Compare apples to apples. I'm talking about a car that can go 40 miles (more than the average commute to work) with no oil.

Not true. The Ford Escape (the worlds most efficient suv) is 34 city/30 hwy. It's actually more efficient in the city. Check yourself.
