I think thats true of everyone. I mean a guy who works at a gas station could be a formula 1 driver in a game. In todays world games can be a real escape from yourself. look at world of warcraft & games like it, where people live a second life as a hero in a fictional world.

I mean I know that in real life i couldnt sprint the length of karkand pull out a PKM & waste several people, or fly a plane for that matter. But in the game I can. That aspect is what makes the game fun for everyone.

That anyone can be a hero, that you can live a dream

Also, I agree with hollow here. not just able bodies enjoy vid games. Those who are challenged may go through some pain or discomfort but in the end... games are like another place you can go and do anything you want. you can walk around Karkand all day long even if you don't have feet in real life.
You just reminded me of of a great character Orlando, from Tad Williams Otherland series of books.... he is a kid who suffers from Werner Syndrome (rapidly ages prematurely, and appears 70 years old by the time he's 12).
The character becomes a "whole" person when he is online, playing his game, instead of being taken care of, and worried over by his parents in real life. Online he is a hero, and is looked up to, and no one ever feels sorry for him, because there is nothing to feel sorry about!

Great story, and very appropriate to this topic.

Nah you shouldnt let something like asthma get the better of you, before arthritis I would walk everywhere.
I'm in Canada; walking in -20 Celcius doesn't feel great when I don't have a problem breathing... My wife couldn't go outside somedays before her meds were changed. This is the first year we have been able to go snowshoeing / skiing together (and wouldn't you know it, we hardly get any snow this year!!! ). Take what you can get!

Not to mention that if you have a condition that is debilitating, but you can still find something you can do, and enjoy, who are we to take that away?

Asthyma can be pretty bad, and no amount of exercise would help (my wife suffers from it). I have heard of some cases, where the mild exercise would literally kill them!
As for the bad eyes, it is a judgement call... Beethoven went deaf for his passion... maybe this brings as much joy for someone else?

I understood your point though, and like many bad habits, you or I can't tell someone to stop because we don't think it is good for them... they have to decide for themselves the risk versus reward. As much as it may hurt us (I have lost three people close to me because of lung cancer, caused by smoking).
Indeed.

I wasn't really saying "you people shouldn't do this" I was just stating an opinion about it.

Wasn't Beethoven's deafness proven to be caused by him eating fish all the time? Or maybe that was just something they thought could have done it to him...

I agree, I wasn't really saying that people with disabilities shouldn't play games. I think it's perfectly fine, but I don't think they should use their misfortune as a excuse to play games all the time.
Again, I'm not assuming that you guys waste your lives away on the computer. Infact, I probably play more than all of you put together

Don't worry =[4th]=SlayThem I don't think you were tryin to say anything mean... no probs

I also don't think games should be something that consumes ones life.

Fortunatley my disability is not bad at this point (it's Progressive) I can still do just about anything I want. I have a job (drive truck, forklift... etc.) I am just being a voice for those who are worse off because I know I will get worse in the comming years and I'll never stop playing!!!

Hi Hollow Moon I'm actually in the same boat you're in
I have Arthritis too, had it since about 3.

Its pretty much all over, but mostly in my hands, neck and feet. I consider myself fortunate though, because there are a lot of people far worse off then I am. I have my really bad days, but most the time I'm able to deal with the pain (plus my pain killers are the kind superman could OD on) heh. Speaking of pain, my left hand is killing me lol.

But yeah, it's nothing that's going to stop me from playing the games I enjoy. Yeah sometimes it hurts to play, but its fun, and the fun out weighs the pain. My BF2 stats may not be the greatest, but it might be some proof that my disability isn’t holding me back much.

Only thing I can recommend is get an awesome chair and make sure your hands and arms are not in awkward positions. Try to be as comfortable as possible. oh, and drugs help heh (the legal kind mind you).

I have a question though, how does ice help? For me that actually causes pain. I will run my hands in hot water and that will at least dull the pain somewhat. For example, when it rains, holy crap thats painfull. Cold sucks for me heh.

I only have one eye.  I lost my left one to retinal cancer when I was 15 months old.  I've no depth perception, and it takes me a little while to get used to extremely detailed environments, such as playing an FPS with extremely high graphic settings.  I can't parse the visual information as fast as people with depth perception/two eyes.

But I still play games, can play tennis, billiards, and I drive quite well.

I am deaf, this is only place I can play as soldier. This is place where I can show off my friends that I did become First Sergeant and will continue increase my global score to reach higher rank.

In reality, I will never able being enroll, draft, etc to become US army, but I know I am last line of defense in America. Whenever enemies touch our America soil, I will pick up a stick and shovel up to their ass!

I'm legally blind.  My eyesight is worse than 20/1000, which is 5 times worse than not being able to read the big "E" at the top of the eye chart.  My contact lenses are special-order and aren't a perfect match (when your vision gets this bad, you'll take anything reasonably close), but they work.  That's absolutely nothing compared to the disabilities of some of the other posters, though...I give you guys credit to the nth power for not letting it stand in your way of playing BF2.

I know a guy who absolutely pwned everyone at a LAN party despite losing use of 3 fingers in his "mouse hand"...people would tease him because he looked like he was afraid the right side of the mouse was going to bite his palm, but they were just bitter that a "cripple" (no offense intended by use of this word) was totally mopping the floor with us...with 2 fingers on his right hand to boot... "So what's YOUR excuse," he would always say, and I think, "damn, good point..."

And No_Smoking, sorry about that...my MP5 there is up to two packs a day.

It seems some of these people need to stay away from the game because of their problem. Such as...

-Bad eyes, Staring at computer screens won't help. Your eyes will get worse.
-Athsma, Shouldn't you be doing something to help that? like some mild exercise?

Maybe it's just me, but I think games would make these things worse over time.
i have bad eyes. not to bad, but ive been playing computer games for a while and it hasn't affected my eye sight.  i suppose thats not for everyone but yea.

But seriously having bad eyesight like that is still a disability & I think we all appreciate hearing from you

Age is catching up to me, but I guess that's not a disability.  I have a lot of little, nagging things - no cartilage in my right knee, arthritis in my right thumb (makes bowling Hell, and bothers me AFTER a round of golf).  I guess I'm in OK shape for pushing 40.  LOL

I get RSI in my right hand from using my mouse.... and I get RSI in my left hand from my obsessive guitar playing.

When I'm gaming and my right hand feels bad, I'll pick up the guitar to give it a rest. Once my left hand starts hurting, then I know it's time to switch back to gaming for a bit.

Boxing is my other main activity..... so it doesn't matter which of my hobbies I choose, I'm gonna fuck my hands up one way or another.
