I agree with the majority: more RAM will help.

Laptops are resource hogs and quite commonly have all kinds of stuff running in the background. Even if BF2 only uses 400 MG of your RAM, your OS and other stuff may use the rest of the available RAM. Windows XP uses at least 200 MB of RAM.  If you give it more, Windows will use more but it is not like previous OS types. Run task manager or press CTRL + SHIFT + ESC. You should be able to see what else is using your available RAM. You can leave that up and run BF2 and watch your resources change while it is closing. Hope it helps.
