Is there a way in Photoshop to quickly pull up a 4 line grid (2 lines vertical/2 horizontal evenly spaced) for composition purposes?

I can roughly guess it, but it'd be much easier with a quick grid.

I wanted to help you out but this is all I could think of and what I do ..

I use the pattern tool to make my grids . I make a new Doucument " 10 x 10 Pixels " Transparent Background.
Then You ZOOM all the way in the 10x10 blank image. Get the Pencil Tool and simply just color in like i did in the picture below.
After that you click " EDIT " at the top left , Then Define Pattern so you can make the pattern.

And heres the result under just using the pattern tool , good luck. I You want to make the grid bigger , I think you can Just change the size of the document so its a larger pattern your making.

Uhm - guides or a grid? Because if you find out how to make guide shortcuts, please tell me - I use them a lot on the borders for rounded corners.

Silly peoples...

Step 1: Edit > Preferences > Guides, Grids, Slices, etc... Enter the preferences you desire here (how often you want a line, etc).
Step 2: View > Show > Grid
Step 3: Tell Omni how cool he is

Also, konfusion, the grid from the method above functions similar to guides in the sense that objects "lock" to the lines.

[edit] Pics because it happened.

Well that's not entirely what I'm looking for.

I mean the rule of thirds.
Always have 2 lines vertical and 2 lines horizontal, evenly space, no matter the size of the document.
