That means you don't have the map or mod currently being played on the server.
Official add-ons for BF2 are Special Forces, Armoured Fury and Euro Forces.
You need to buy and install these to play all the ranked BF2 maps.
Armoured Fury and Euro Forces must be downloaded online.

I have all three installed and I still have the red maps.

How do I obtain the extra Mods? Is there a special site?

Go to Modjive.com, and download the Modjive application...you can use that to obtain all the major mods.
If you want to get rid of the red maps, click the 'same mod' filter below the server list, but bear in mind this will also stop you seeing SF servers while in normal BF2 and vice versa
