My girlfriend and I were at the beach today, on our bikes, sitting, enjoying the wonderful day. Then comes this group of three teenage boys on their bikes, jumping off rocks, pulling all these "madd" stunts and whatnot, and I'm thinking, "someone's going to get hurt." Of course, they all had no protective gear, not even helmets. I was, and I asked my girlfriend to wear one as well. Of course she didn't want to, but she did in the end. Moving on.
The three kids leave the beach, and we leave shortly after.
We are behind them some distance, but I can still see them pretty well. They were all over the road, crisscrossing, going on and off the sidewalk, just being stupid. Suddenly, one of the kids speeds off from behind a parked car, and got hit by a big black SUV. He went flying off his bike, off the side of the SUV and onto the pavement. I nearly shit myself when I saw this, and cycled as fast as I could over to him. As I yelled for a bystander to dial 911, I told him to lie perfectly still (he was conscious) since I wasn't sure if he hurt his neck (no helmet). He seemed to have hurt his right arm, I told him to not move it. Meanwhile, there's a big crowd of people now, trying to help, and some people got ice, and a pillow for his head. I kept his head and neck straight using the inside of my hands (between thumb and index finger) until the paramedics arrived. Then they took over.
The whole time, the driver of the SUV is going crazy, crying, and she felt horrible. (She was probably speeding though). I'm not sure who is more at fault here, the woman who may have been speeding, or the kid who was all over the road.
Turns out the kid had a broken right arm and wrist, and mildly hurt his neck.
Moral of the story:
1. Don't do stupid shit when on a bike.
2. Don't speed in residential neighborhoods.
3. Wear a helmet. It's better to look funny than get a head injury.
Discuss.
