Considering how much a lot of the world pays for gas, I'd say things aren't going to change much until it hits about $10 a gallon.

We probably will see a major drop in SUV sales over the next few years though.  A lot of goods will likely rise in price as well due to rising transit costs.

$1.00 is too much. We should be paying maybe $0.50 a gallon. There will always be a surplus of gas and oil until reserves are dipped in to and drilling stops. This shit is all malarkey.

In the latest AAA poll as oil hits a a record $117 a barrel and gas gets closer and closer to $4 a gallon, more and more drivers are doing just the opposite and shelfing their keys.
Meanwhile, truckers are already fucked. Diesel is about $4.50/gal.

You can drive that? As a new driver?

Insurance must be dirt cheap over there. It'd cost upwards of $5000 US a year to insure that for a new driver in the UK. You need no claims bonuses and experience.

the higher the better.  It will push the search for alternative energy sources harder.  The only time it's too high is if the cost gets so high that our dependancy upon it financially cripples the nation.

I own a 2007 Black prius, and is one of the best car's ive ever owned. Gettin 49.6 life time avg off the MFD display..usually get 525 mi to a tank..if i got more into hypermiling i could easily pull 60+ like some guys are doing with proper driving technique.

and prius isnt a sissy car, unless your driving silver pine mica..lol Mine is black, and has a kickin sound system in it to boot. Great thing abour prius is you can really throw some nice 10's in with alot of watt's goin to them. The car battery/hybrid system handles alot of power draw and has no affect. One guy online is running 2 class D monoblocks at 1500w each for over 3 years with no ill effects, no need for extra batteries or a rewound alternator..the prius owns.

next gen 3 prius body, will have 1.8l turbocharged, and hopefully 20% more FE. Rumour is litium ion batteries, but we'll see. I would like to see higher capacity NIHM at least, they had them in the EV1 which could go roughly 120mi on a charge. Now what they need to do instead of rumoured plug in for 2010, is do solor panels built into the roof, like one of the cal car prius on youtube..no need to plug in, with Regen and hybrid recharge+solor..120MPG easy.

currently in winnipeg, canada we are paying roughly $1.20-1.25 per litre, i remember back in 2000 gas prices had gone as low as .32 cents per litre here, that year i owned a firebird, and my buddy owned a vette, my dad had an old 300 gallon tank sitting on the yard, and we took advantage of it and filled it with premium gas for the summer for our cars, lasted the whole summer.  Paid roughly 400 bucks split 2 ways to keep our cars filled for the year, totally worth it, and i love driving, gas could be 3 bucks a litre and i would still drive all the time.  And yes i drive a gas gussling suv   but the 4x4 is totally worth it in winter.

Almost yes. Name 10 production vehicles that are on US soil that makes over 50mpg.

Well in the UK the focus is not just on good mpg, instead more on suitability. Driving a 4x4 that will never see a field is going the way of unacceptable (City Moms). Simple things like choosing a saloon car instead. I rarely see a Prius.

I have been paying over 4 dollars a gallon for the past 3 weeks. Sucks having to use 93 octane.

Well that's what you damn Canucks get for using the metric system!

What it takes to produce a product is an entirely different argument than the fuel economy of said product. The majority of their argument is them attacking the factory where the batteries are made. Now, the battery is merely one part of a thousand piece automobile, but by golly, its gonna sink the whole damn thing.

And I would bet you that the money/energy/money saved in a year of driving a hybrid more than makes up for any money saved in the production of a Hummer (which gets 10 mpg on a good day. Downhill. With the wind.)

And considering at least 3 of the people of the board of directors of this "think tank" own or are CEO of petroleum or oil companies, I'm gonna go ahead and walk away completely unimpressed.

Sorta bs. I know everyone else in the world thinks we're babies, but, we're not in tightly crowded cities with public transportation at every corner (well, we all don't live in NYC). My drive from home to work is 25 miles, one way. We driver more miles on average than the rest of you chaps, so we need lower prices. I do understand that we did it to ourselves, with everyone thinking they needed an SUV that gets 8 miles to the gallon (my father-in-law gets like 9 in his Hummer). But, that's going to change with the steady increase of the prices and people's short tempers.

I just wish they'd stop showing commercials for Hydrogen vehicles when we're like 20-30 years away from seeing them everywhere. Fucking GM. Stupid fucks would rather show commercials of them instead of really putting money into developing them. And they should kill that black dude from the WAMU commercials they use in it. /rant

I think the real killer is the fact that America actually has too much space. With so much land around us, there was no reason to curb the urban sprawl and the never ending monotony of suburbs. What was once convenience has now become complete dependence.

This meteoric spike in prices may actually cause a new migration of people to the cities so they can be closer to their jobs, markets, friends, etc.
