All politicians pushing for corn ethanol should be shot voted out of office.
One more stunning chapter in the George Bush legacy.

Currently, the Defense Department says it is spending about $4.5 billion a month on the conflict in Iraq, or about $100,000 per minute.

Current spending in Afghanistan is about $800 million a month, or about $18,000 per minute.
Thats a lot of fucking rice.

I'm the emergency preparation leader for my local mormon congregation and I organize food canning trips (we run our own canning facility and have tons of basics to can (wheat, rice, oats, sugar, beans, etc) and I have started noticing a panic among my people.  They're watching their Fox news and seeing that there's no more rice anywhere so they're panicking like a bunch of typical Fox-fed n00bs and telling me to set up another rice canning trip.  I actually had to tell a panicked sister that there's actually a shortage of rice and some other grains for several heavy rice using countries, but that we're safe in our country and there's no need to hoard.  She looked unphased.  I hate the media.

Anyway, this is specifically why our church leaders have been saying since the 50's to have a year supply of basics with 3 months of common food and water.  Bummer our leaders didn't say how to keep it safe from looters once everyone knows the mormons got all the food storage! lol

It was a failed conception from the start. Maybe we should have let the market decide the best fuel alternative?

Oh well, let's export our inflation and make food more expensive around the globe shall we?

Because farmers are making more money growing subsidized corn for ethanol.

Which is fucking up the whole world.
But Iraq will be just fine.

US farm subsidies are stupid. Even more stupid than the CAP in Europe (damn those French farmers! Though I think Sarkozy might let it get reformed, hurray!).

When the US sneezes, the rest of the world catches a cold. There's little you can do right now to stop that.

It's a huge crop in Louisiana and Southeast Texas.

How did you connect a perceived shortage in rice to corn ethanol?

lol...ethanol

These guys haven't done their research...

The energy gains from corn ethanol are negligible at best, and there isn't enough corn in the world to meet our demand.

They should put that money into algae based biodiesel, it's far more promising.

I don't think it is politicians not following research - I think it's politicians and industry figuring out a way to justify/continue ridiculous farming subsidies like the Farm Bill.

I know this.  I created a thread about the negative effects a focus on corn ethanol would have on world food supplies about a year ago.  This article is of little relevance to that idea.  My thread even mentioned how this would impact illegal immigration.  I figured you would have been all over that
