Well, I don't think I'm going to get into the Air Force Academy because my grades aren't the best, but I have a 3.875 GPA, but I still have two years of high school left to go. Has anyone ever gone through ROTC in college? I want to go to the AFA, but I want to know what AFROTC is like.

I have on information about it, but I know A&M is Army. I am not sure what branch the ROTC for UT is. UNT is AFROTC.

A&M has all branches of ROTC. One of my office mates is an Aggie (I'm active duty AF...via ROTC @ OU) and he is one of the finest officers I have ever had the pleasure of serving with. A&M will give you an "academy-like" environment without going to an academy. There are several schools with cadet corps like that (VMI, Va Tech, the Citadel, RPI, etc).
ROTC is a great way to get your commission. You get military training (some that is much more useful to the real world than the Academy's), you get to experience real college life...many benefits. Your chances of getting a pilot or nav slot aren't as good, but that's really up to you: the top performers get them.

Well my friend told me that 14/16 pilot slots were filled from UT. What about A&M? How many people go for pilot there usually and how many people get the spots?FEOS wrote:

Don't know. The UT number is just the number of pilot slots either allocated to UT or to the Region. Every det gets pilot and nav slots. Don't pick the school because of those numbers, as they change from year to year.

That's right around the 50th percentile for appointees to USAFA. Your grades aren't the best, but they are well within the "competitive" range.ThaReaper wrote:

Seriously though, military loves sharp dressing. Watch a MEPS center and look at all the dirty looks the branches throw at each other whenever one or the other gets a snazzy-looking guy with a good haircut. To be honest, I've washed my hands of the whole debacle. The plus side is, I can now shave my face if I ever need material for a mattress or a long coat.SEREMAKER wrote:

Apply to the Air Force Academy's Summer Seminar. I got into Annapolis', and I have a worse GPA than you. The key for the academy's is the SAT (or for Summer Programs, they exclusively look at PSAT if you haven't taken the SAT/ACT). If you do well on those, and have a decent extra-curricular life, you'll be fine. The West Point Rep here said that 60% of your ap is the SAT. Don't fuck that up. Never say Never.
We've been through this in other threads...in ROTC, your school and degree have nothing to do with your chances of getting a pilot slot. It's all about AFOQT and BAT scores, along with your performance in school (regardless of major) and ROTC curriculum.Poseidon wrote:

If you decide to go ROTC instead of the AF Academy you should look for the best school for your particular academic program. It's a good if you decide not to make a career of the military and even if you do, most officers at O-4 and above have some kind of advanced degree (MBA, MS, MA, PhD, etc.).
I'd also recommend taking some time (definitely while in school, but also when you have free time) to familiarize yourself with one of the following languages: French, Spanish, Chinese, or Arabic. A couple of years ago the AF started to train NCOs in those languages and to beef up the AF's cultural training in general. This would put you right on track with the kind of force-wide changes they want to make.
