if you've enabled SSL, and there is no fall back, change the url from http to https

Otherwise add :443 to the url (eg: www.gohere.com:443)

SSL encrypts all traffic between client and server, otherwise it is exactly the same as regular http content.

How are you editing the site?  Please tell me the process and what software or sites your using.

SSL is a web server technology and normally can only be set by the server admins so I'm a little confused about how you're using or have used it.  It has nothing to do with FTP though.

There is SFTP via SSH and if it is an FTP client then using SFTP only tells the client to use port 22 instead of 21 and to use some advanced security features.  Setting the check box off in the site config in your FTP client for SFTP or SSH will set it back to normal.

Ok, I think I see whats going on, at least I understand the confusion.  Is this the admin panel from a hosting site or something like myspace/facebook?

No matter what the service, enabling SSL on a web site shouldn't prevent you from accessing it via FTP.  If you can't access it via FTP then contact the site's support staff for help.  SSL wouldn't prevent FTP as it's an entirely different technology.

What hosting site are you using?  Chances are you can disable SSL if you don't need it but you may have to contact the site's support to do it.

Just checked my client, FireFTP (FTP in Firefox).

It has the option in security to use SSL or TLS, 3 in fact, and one of them changes the port to 990, "Implicit SSL". It also has SFTP.

Mebe try that
