Honestly, are you all joking? Trackballs ARE NOT FOR FPS GAMES! They are for old ladies who are trying to avoid joint pain associated with using a normal mouse. I can GUARANTEE that if you learn to use a standard optical/laser mouse that you will improve your game immensely.
There are about 23 muscles in your wrist (its around that figure) and about 50 in your fingers...

Now which do you think would be more precise?
Whoa... Can't believe these forums are still kicking.

Logitech mx518 with optical xtrac pro pad   nothing like having in game sensitivity adjustments on the fly. Improves on sniping and general play bigtime!!!  No mouse can really be compared to it until you try it!;(

its better to have a laser mouse with adapter in typical PC, in laptops i'd use wireless laser mouse, though.
Wireless need batteries, u know...

Since I started playing FPS I realized the superiority of a trackball device over a mouse.  I started with a Kensington Orb and graduated to a Logitch Marble - optical.  The problem with the mouse is you have to constantly reset your center.  Whenever I have to use one at work, I find myself mousing with my arm half way accross my desk if I'm not paying attention.  In FPS that is death.

Do yourselves a favor and check out a Marble Mouse.  They're only $20-$30, easy to use, and your hand stays in one place.

i used to use the marble mouse as well ... until i went to a lan-party, marble mouse broke and i had to borrow a regular mouse.

yes, your skills improve pretty fast. so if u were already ok or ggod with a marble, you should become better with a good mouse.

going a little off topic: i use a thrustmaster tacticalboard for at least 4 years now, and it beats any z-board or other keyboard replacement I've seen

Kensington Expert Trackball 5.0. Its optical and wired with a big ball on it.

Seems to work ok for me, but I wonder if there is an even better way to do fps. Would a gamepad work or something that is not mouse based?
