To increase your field of view go to your console (`, top left beside 1) and type "/cg_fov 80". This will increase your field of view, allowing you to see more, but you're slightly zoomed out, as you see in these screenshots.

65 (default)

80 (max)

For full size Screenshots (1280x1024) here's the 65 and here's the 80.

Also I get around 2-3 FPS more with the 80 degrees FOV.

For some reason, 80 was the default on my monitor.  Maybe because it's 1680x1050.

Hmm, yeah, maybe the widescreen support is much better on CoD4 than on BF2.

Yup, however, in TF2 I had to adjust it manually.  Although a 90 degree FOV is .

I just checked and mine is 65 and my resolution is 1680x1050, pretty cool, but I prefer the 65...

trust me, 80 is much better.  especially on a widescreen monitor like yours.

Maybe, I am not used to it. But, the guns look kinda further away. I might try it again later.

yeah, you have to get used to it but once you do you'll have a slight advantage.  it really is natural to have a 80 degree FOV on a widescreen monitor.  on a regular monitor, 65 is natural.

So you are saying that I ought to keep the 65? Because I have a regular 17'' LCD monitor.

i'm saying it's how it's truly supposed to look.  if you can handle a slightly squashed screen angle with a 4:3 monitor, then go for it.  you'll see moar too.
